Beech Tree Geocache Hunt Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Wis Kid: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Expect a tree-mendous experience when you find this Peninsula State Park cache. Cache prizes are for kids only. A state park vehicle sticker is required.

Meet the Beech Tree. Take your picutre by a Beech Tree and post it on the website. Peninsula Plans to create a memory photo book of park visitors by Beech Trees. Prizes in this cache are intended for children ages ten and younger, as supplies are limited.

Beech Bark Disease is caused by an exotic scale insect and a Neonectria fungus. Both are present in Door County. In coming years, DNR foresters will work with park staff to remove diseased trees, especially those that pose a safety concern in high-use recreational areas.

It's a short, easy walk from a park road and along a trail to this cache. Notice the deer exclosure cage nearby. Three exclosure cages were constructed in Peninsula State Park in 1992 to demonstrate the effects of deer browse on forest plants. A second cage is by the Nature Center and a third is on park land near Gibraltar School.

This cache is part of Peninsula State Park's Like to Hike program. Participate in five or more "silent sports" and be eligible to purchase a custom pin for just $3. Pick up a free Like to Hike log at Park Headquarters or the nature center, or visit wiparks.net and search "Peninsula Like to Hike" for more information.

A Wisconsin DNR Geocache Placement Notification (Form 2500-118) has been submitted and approved by the Peninsula State Park Superintendent.
