Pohick Bay Regional Park

Lorton, VA

Spring has sprung! Come join NoVAGO for a day of fun, food, stories, and great caches! Anyone and everyone who is interested in Geocaching is welcome to join us; no experience necessary. New to the game? New to the area? Visiting from out of town? We want to see YOU at the Spring Event.

From the Pohick Bay web site:

Pohick Bay is a water oriented park located on the Potomac River 25 miles south of the nation's capital. Our boat launch facility is one of only 3 public access points to the Potomac River in northern Virginia and the closest to Washington DC and its famous waterfront. Pohick Bay offers canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and jon boats for rent on the weekends. In addition to water activities the park also offers family and group camping, hiking, picnic areas and a large play area for children. For those of you interested in swimming, we offer one of the largest, outdoor freeform pools on the east coast! Please contact the park about swim lessons for your family.

Event Schedule

NoVAGO has rented Shelter #1 for the day. We'll fire up the grills early, and you're invited to come any time to socialize, eat, and enjoy the day at Pohick Bay.

Picnic

Our picnic lunch will be a potluck event, so please post the dish you'll be bringing in your "Will Attend" log. We'll keep a master list of who is bringing what on the NoVAGO forums in this thread.

Awards Presentations

Every year, NoVAGO members vote in an awards process to honor some of the best caches that were placed in Northern Virginia. This is a chance to recognize the efforts of your fellow NoVAGO cachers who have placed hides that you have enjoyed. Check out the forums for more information. Note: We have moved the presentation forward a little (to noon) so we can make sure to have time to get to the docks for the paddling!)

Paddling

After our picnic, we'll head to the water. If you have never paddled before, Pohick Bay is a great place to learn! The park offers kayak and canoe rentals, or if you own your own craft, bring it.

This will be a very casual, relaxed afternoon. You can paddle 50 feet and return to the dock, or go for a multi-mile boating excursion. Or, if you just want to sit on shore and enjoy the day, that's fine too. If you're brand new, we'll have some experienced hydrocachers on scene to offer some basic paddling tips, and perhaps a new hydrocache or two around to tempt those wanting to get a head start on some summer paddling and caching.

Important Information

  • The park has a vehicle entrance fee for non-NVRPA member jurisdictions. Residents of Alexandria, Arlington, City of Fairfax, Fairfax County, Falls Church and Loudoun will be able to enter the park free of charge. See the park web site for more information. The non-jurisdiction fee is $4 (with shelter discount, let them know you're with NoVAGO at Pavilion 1).
  • Please do not log travel bugs into the event and leave them on a table to be retrieved by other cachers. If you'd like to trade TBs, please do so from person to person. This way they can be accounted for and none get left on the event page and deemed to be MIA.
  • Pets are permitted, provided they are leashed and not loose.
  • We hope you can make it on April 26th!
