The Madison Area Herpetelogical Society (MAHS) is a non-profit organization that specializes in the education of reptiles and amphibians. MAHS's goal is to help educate the general public about frequently misunderstood reptiles and amphibians which we are strongly passionate about. Each MAHS cache series will give information about a select species of reptile or amphibian mainly native to WI but some will be other species located around the world. Naja Naja, better known as the Indian Cobra is a venomous snake found throughout Asia. These gorgeous snakes vary in color and can grow roughly between 3-5ft long. Some have been known to reach up to 7ft in length. This cobra species can easily be identified by its large hood which it expands with special bones along its neck. It has a unique ornate pattern on the back of its hood to help try and scare away predators. (as if being a cobra wouldn't be enough to scare most away) a majority of snake bites that happen in Asia annually are from Naja Naja.
This happens mainly from unwary barefoot farmers working in rice patties who unknowingly step on them or get to close while the cobra is hunting mice in these fields.
