OAHT 1525: Devil’s Hollow
At this Geocache look to the North a from this location and over the tree line you will see what is left of a ski jump known as Devil’s Hollow.
In 1926 the Oconomowoc Ski Club was organized. On December 17th the large (90 ft.), small (12 ft.) and small toboggan slides were erected.
1939 - the Wisconsin Open State Ski Jumping championships were held at Devil’s Hollow.
1940 – Walter Bietila sets hill record at 126 ft.
1941 – Movietone News and Universal Newsreel Co. film annual meet
1942 – Largest number of entries in jumping contest – 124 jumpers
1943 – All activities canceled due to War. Ida Pabst sells property to Boy Scouts, but made provisions that the ski club could use property as long as it wished.
1946 – The Ski Club re-organized
1947 – After staging several successful tournaments the ski club purchased the land from the Boy Scouts and made improvements to the jump and warming house.
1948 – 1958 Competition from the many new post WWII clubs eventually doomed Devil’s Hollow. The new slides being built allowed longer jumps and had smoother runout areas. Top skiers stopped coming to Oconomowoc to compete. Local ski club sells the property in 1958. The ski jump remains on its original site.
