Anderson Park District introduces the APD GeoTrail (launched Fall 2015) offering a trail of caches throughout eight of our parks. This trail is an excellent way to get outside and visit all of our beautiful parks throughout the township. Upon completion, you will have the opportunity to purchase one of our custom Geocoins. Veterans Park
Located at 8531 Forest Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45255, Veterans Park is open from dawn to dusk, excluding special events. During the winter months, one restroom will remain open; in the event of severe weather, the restrooms will remain closed. This park features the “Lucky Lanier All Children’s Playground” designed with the physically challenged child in mind. A large reservable shelter sits beside the playground while a .4 mile jogging trail encircles the entire park. This park also sports a top-notch ball diamond, 2 soccer fields, a basketball court & small reservable shelter with a fire ring.
History of Veterans Park
Originally known as Forest Park, the 12.166 acres for Veterans Park was purchased in 1978. The park received a ‘face lift’ in 1997, made possible by a NatureWorks grant awarded in 1996. The cost for the project totaled $201,440; the NatureWorks grant provided for 75% of the funds which were matched by the APD’s 25%. Included was the addition of a Memorial Plaza to honor the veterans, a shelter which seats over 100 people, a modern restroom building and associated utility upgrades, a basketball court and a relocated shelter with seating for 20 people, now situated by the fire ring. Substantial improvements were also made to the park’s overall landscaping, the parking lot and the entrance driveway. The park was rededicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 1997 to all Anderson residents who served in the U.S. armed services.
The playground at Veterans Park was initially constructed in 1988. It was one of the first playgrounds of its type in the Tri-state area that was specifically designed to include children with disabilities. By partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Anderson Hills and using our own labor, the aging equipment and facility at Veterans Park have now been replaced with new, more advanced play structures. The surrounding playscape has also been renovated. The total cost of the construction was $74,694.83, with the material cost being covered by the Kiwanis Club of Anderson Hills and other outside donations and fundraisers. Upon finding each of our caches, geocachers can collect a code word from each cache. Write the code word down for each cache (APD Passport). Once you have found all the caches and collected all the code words, stop by the Anderson Parks RecPlex to purchase our custom GeoCoin! The Anderson Parks RecPlex is located at 6915 Beechmont Ave. and we are open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (excluding holidays). The first opportunity to purchase our GeoCoin was at our Launch event on September 26th, 2015.
