Geocaching Melbourne is working closely with the City of Casey to help promote the past time of Geocaching within their community. Geocaching Melbourne tasked a small group of local cachers to help identify ways that this can be better done. One of the ways that they have come up with is to run some CITO events at areas, identified by the Casey Council that require rubbish removal. This is the fourth of a number of CITO events that Geocaching Melbourne will hold in conjunction with the City of Casey and the Casey Cachers this year.
- 10am - midday Registration (for the Clean up Australia Day component of the day if you wish to participate).
- Also signing the attendance log and choosing a lucky ticket for FTF will be open.
- There will be a clearly visible table at the event co-ordinates and clean up tools set up, this will remain in that area until approx midday. As the clean up tools are being provided by council, you will need to sign these in and out.
- IMPORTANT! If you plan to participate in the Clean Up Australia day component of the day Registration is essential for insurance purposes and we would prefer you to register ahead of time online by following this link: here
Gloves, Bags, and Clean up tools will be supplied for everyone, however if you have your own please by all means bring them as our resources are limited. Parking is available along the road. There are no public toilets nearby however.
- Please note, access to the registration desk, the posted co-ordinates is T1 (Wheelchair accessible) but the majority of the site where the clean-up is being held is not. The ground around the surrounding site is un-even under-foot.
- Also note that this CITO is being conducted along a busy road. Whilst there is plenty of car-parking space between the road and the clean-up zone, it is important to beware of the danger, especially with children.
If you are familiar with the area and have a specific part of the area that you would like to clean up please message us ahead of time and we can allocate that area to you.
There are several good caches within the area, so please come down and get a smiley or two whilst helping the environment :)

Geocaching Melbourne and the City of Casey would like to remind participants though, that this CITO, like all facets of geocaching, can be dangerous and like any geocaching activity there are inherent risks that you must assume (as per the geocaching terms of use guidelines, section 2A that you have agreed to when signing up your geocaching account).
Geocaching Melbourne and the City of Casey would like to draw your attention to some of the possible dangers that we have identified at this CITO site.
- Uneven Ground – You must be wearing solid, adequate footwear. Watch where you are walking and remain in groups of at least three.
- Slopes – Avoid wet slopes. Avoid Steep slopes
- Sun glare – If it is present, wear sunglasses.
- Snakes – There is a likelihood of snake activity in this area. If you come across a snake, do not attempt to touch or move the snake. Back away from the snake and let the snake move away. Remain in groups of three. If one member is bitten by a snake, a second can remain with the bitten member while the third can go back to the registration desk and seek medical help. If a member is bitten, keep them as still as possible. Do not wash or suck the bite.
- Bees/Wasps/Insects – There is a likelihood of bees, wasps and insects in this area. If you come across a nest or hive, do not attempt to touch or move it. If a member is bitten or stung, seek medical help from the registration desk.
- Sharps – Avoid collecting sharp objects such as glass or metal without the use of suitable gloves. Do NOT attempt to remove needles or syringes. There is a sharps container at the registration desk, report the finding of any needles or syringes to the registration desk.
- Heavy Objects – Do not attempt to remove heavy objects by yourself. Heavy objects should always be lifted in a team. If the object is too heavy for a team of people, reports its location to the registration desk.
- Chemicals – Report the finding of any dangerous chemicals (industrial chemicals, explosives, insecticides) to the registration desk. Make sure chemicals such as paints, oils, batteries are separated from all other rubbish. Do not attempt to pick up any chemical containers without using suitable gloves. Be very careful of aerosol containers on hot days.
- Manual Handling – Please use suitable gloves. Grabbing sticks are available at the registration desk; Hessian bags are available at the registration desk. Do not overload bags.
- Traffic – Traffic control measures have been put in place along Churchill Park Drive. Traffic will be slowed down to 40km/h for the duration of this event. The council and local police are aware of these measures. Please take care at all times along the road and whilst collecting rubbish remain at least 3m from the road. Please do NOT cross the road.
The most important of the above is that you must wear solid footwear. The terrain around these sites is uneven and it is a real concern of council that some people may turn up wearing inappropriate footwear. If you turn up with open toed foot wear (ie sandals or thongs) you will be allowed to sign the log book and help out around the registration desk, but you will not be allowed to help clean up the rubbish. If there are adverse weather conditions, or a fire danger rating at or above a “severe” level, the events will be cancelled. You will be required to sign the log book before you begin collecting rubbish. The log book doubles as also your registration for CUAD (Clean Up Australia Day) which covers us for our liability insurance.
If you are coming to one of the CITOs, and you are able to, if you could bring along any of the following from home, it would be very useful…
- Your own gloves
- Your own hi-viz vest
- Your own bottle of water
- Sun hat/sun glasses
- Anything else you may have at home that you think might be useful.
Finally, if you are coming to one of the CITOs and you have a certificate 2 or above 1st aid, if you could let one of the organizers know, it would be very appreciated.
