Geocache Description:

Anishinaabemowen or Ojibwe word for Balsam(s) is Zhingob(iig). The Ojibwe Peoples are a major component group of the Anishinaabe-speaking peoples, a branch of the Algonquian language family. The Anishinaabe peoples include the Algonquin, Nipissing, Oji-Cree, Odawa and the Potawatomi. This plant was widely used medicinally by various North American Indian tribes. The resin was used as an antiseptic healing agent applied externally to wounds, sores, bites etc., it was used as an inhalant to treat headaches and was also taken internally to treat colds, sore throats and various other complaints. The Latin name for the balsam fir is “ Abies balsamea”.

*** BALSAM BEGINNING AND END***

Cachers need to find the first stage and final stage of this multi-cache among the balsam firs of Pattison State Park. The rating is higher due to the bouncy GPS signal at stage 1. Anticipate widening your search because it was difficult to narrow the spot of stage 1 due to heavy tree cover.

All stages are accessed from the west Beaver Slide Nature Trail which is along the west shore of Interfalls Lake.

It is best hiked from south to north for finding the stages. When at the final stage, be sure to look up and around to see a wildlife home among the larger trees.

Please replace the cache exactly as you found it. Bring Your Own Pencil. The logsheet must be signed, otherwise there is no proof of your success.
