View from Big Logs
Laminated guides for the walk can be borrowed from The Silver Plough, or the dispenser in front of the Village Hall. Please return them after enjoying the walk. The walk is also waymarked with distinctive white discs, in addition to the Wiltshire Footpath discs.
We recommend you approach “Big Logs” from Pitton, either parking at The Silver Plough, if you also intend to be a client after your walk, or perhaps behind the Village Hall? There are limited choices for adjacent street parking, so please park with consideration. “Stout footwear” may be appropriate if you are going all the way round, as some of the tracks can be a little muddy after the cavalry has passed by. Don't worry if you hear the sound of distant thunder; probably heavy artillery on Salisbury Plain practising for our next war.
From Pitton, take the unmade track with the Village Hall on your right. After passing the tennis courts on your right, take the path on your left which runs parallel to the track. The path splits after reaching a cottage on your right, and yes, you guessed correctly, our route is the left hand uphill path. After the climb, you can draw breath and enjoy the view from a pair of memorial benches. A new cache, Little Log, has been added as a prologue to the series, so do seek it out before the memorial benches. Shortly after the pair of benches, there is a third “in the wood”, and then you will arrive at two Big Logs.
See Spoiler for the cache location, which is behind the dog. Although after ten years, the Big Log is now just dessicated wood fibre It is at waist height, and big enough for small swaps. The log sheet is in the white container inside the cache. Do bring your own pen. Please close the box ensuring it is water-tight and hidden as found; safe for the next visitor.
