You need to find a fossil. I'm not talking about digging for bones or trilobites. In fact no digging is need, and what you can find, if you're lucky, is an imprint of an ancient leaf, or maybe, if you're really lucky, a fish scale.
I was introduced to this place in college while attending a geology seminar. About 50 people spent about 1/2 hour cracking sandstone rocks along this country road to see if we could find one. I got lucky and found one, not everyone did. Let's see if you can find one.
All you need is a small rock hammer, or any hammer. The rock is soft and not hard to split. The hard part may be getting it to split into layers. Split the rock, and then carefully look at each piece to see if you found one. It might not be the whole leaf, so check for pieces too. There is no need to dig into the hillside since plenty of rocks are laying on the ground waiting to be tapped.
To claim this cache you need to:
1) Find a fossil at THIS SPOT ONLY
2) Post a picture of you and your find
The is plenty of room for 5 or 6 cars to park, it's publicly accessable, you can see the road for a good distance, and there is very little traffic.
Happy Hunting,
george
Note: I know the head of the geology department at the local college and he's assured me this is not a delicate or even significant site. The fossils are just imprints in sandstone and it's OK to break the rocks. Wearing safety glasses when doing so would be prudent
I live very close to this area and I am up here often. If I notice that the area is being impacted in a detremental way I will archive this cache.
Admin note ~ This is a unique virtual cache, and is posted for that reason. "Unique" implies "one of a kind", so please infer from that not to submit copy-cat caches of this genre. Thank you.
