Geocache Description:

This cache is in memory of Mike Curtin, an Orange County geocacher who died September 1, 2002 while out caching on the Santiago Truck Trail. It was 109 degrees that day and it is believed Mike succumbed to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Mike is survived by his wife and 2 sons.

The objective of this cache is to allow those who knew Mike and those who did not to pay their respects, share their thoughts, and reflect on how short and precious life is. We hope it is a moment where you can send your prayers to Mike’s family and hold your own loved ones a little tighter.

There is a journal in the cache where you can share your thoughts, inspirational words, stories about Mike if you knew him, or whatever is in your heart. You are also welcome to leave something in the cache, but please do not take anything that is obviously a personal memento to Mike. Travel bugs and generic stuff are fine to take.

We hope that someone out there will let Mike’s family, friends, and co-workers know about this cache. It would be great if someone could put a picture of Mike in the journal, too. If his family ever wants the cache archived, we will do so at their request.

OC Geocachers, we are a community bound by a passion for the sport, a love of the outdoors, and an appreciation for physical and mental challenges. We hope many of you will stop by this cache to honor one of our own who died while doing what we all love to do.

The cache is about 0.5 miles in from the trailhead. We put it close to encourage people to visit. The trailhead is on Modjeska Grade Rd, just off Santiago Canyon Road near Cook’s Corner. Trailhead coordinates are N33 42.158, W117 38.186. One piece of advice so you don't turn this into a 4 star terrain effort--take the high road. If you are up for more caching, check out La Luna, High Road to Fossil Hill cache, Fossil Hill cache, Santiago Truck Trail Endurance cache, Old Camp, and Cook's Corner cache.

The cache contains:
A journal to log your find and your thoughts. It also contains what we know about Mike, including his last find.
A beaded gecko
A travel bug kit (start your own travel bug!)
$1,000,000 bill
Oakley medallion
Geocaching patch

A special thanks to CompassMike for letting us know about Mike Curtain's death. While neither Kevin and Susan nor the ZenBabes knew Mike, we send our deepest sympathy to his family.
