Geocache Description:

The area surrounding this cache was a Prisoner of War camp during World War II (see below). You can find the only remaining baking oven from the kitchen within a few hundred feet of the cache's location. Area around cache is level and is a nice pine grove.

We selected this site as we've spent many days eating lunch in this location during our fall bird hunting trips. Weather always seems to be sunny and warm when we are here. We enjoy the trails and walks around the area. Have fun and enjoy!

I would suggest a stop at the Jackman Chamber of Commerce where an informational brochure can be found, produced by 2007 Jackman eighth graders that worked to procure a monument to this site, now standing in front of the old stove. If you are so inclined, pick up a copy of the history of German POW camps in Maine entitled Prisoners, Pulpwood, and Potatoes, The story of German POWs in Maine 1944-1946 by William R. Randall. Fascinating local history! Immense research! My hat goes off to you all! My father provided me a copy of this documentary this past summer when he came back from visiting his hometown of Moose River, ME.
