The Twistesee is an artificial lake a few kilometers outside the
city of Arolsen in the beautiful region of Sauerland. It covers 121
hectares and contains 9,1 million m3 water of superb quality. The
lake and its surroundings are the scene of diverse recreational
opportunities including fishing, swimming, camping, hiking and
non-motorized boating.
The Twistesee was initially conceived for the purposes of flood
control and stream flow regulation. Planning started in 1965 after
devastating floods had struck the Twiste, Diemel and Weser valleys.
Construction of an earthen dam over the original river channel
began in 1972. It was completed in 1979 with a restaurant build on
top of the concrete intake structure.
As the dam began holding back the waters of the Twiste, the
river slowly flooded its banks and as it crept higher and higher,
it swallowed the little hamlet of Lefringhausen. Today, all that is
left of Lefringhausen are some ruins on a small island. From the
cache location, you have an excellent view over the lake and the
islands. On a clear day the sunlight reflects on a metal plaque
near the water’s edge that tells the story of the sunken
hamlet.
