Geocache Description:

Granite Plaque & Sugar Pine ~ Madera lumber Flume

This was the original Flume ride from which all Fun Park Flume rides owe their existence. Even Disney's "Thunder Mountain".

When you log this cache, please email me with the answers to the following questions: (1) What are the years listed for the Flume? (2) How long did it take to build? (3) When was it shut down? (4) When was it reopened? (5) How many flowers are on this plaque?

When a Lumberjack was injured, they would put him in a hollowed out log with an attendant at the head and the tail end, armed with only a stout stick to remove branches and apply the brakes as best they could. When lumberjacks wanted to go to Madera, (Lumber in Spanish), they would ride a hollowed out log through all 10 Station houses, all 56 miles until they got to Madera. They would sometimes reach speeds of 60 miles an hour! Check out Poison Switch Cache. To see pictures of the flume in operation & the clamps that would hold rough cut planks, visit the Gold Gulch Museum in Coarsegold Gulch, (Check my website) Have Fun Caching, Frenchy
