Well, I suppose you’re thinking you can bag this one easily – because of the name of the cache. But before you dash off on your lunch break with only your GPSr and an apple, read on.
The cache you are seeking is just off of the Appalachian Trail between Rt. 60 and Little Irish Creek. The shortest way is from Long Mountain Wayside – you will hike almost 2 miles to the cache on the gently descending A.T. You will pass stone walls, house foundations, chimneys, and the remains of an old water mill. The ruins date from the early 1900’s, when the area was settled by former slaves. Although it is now a mature forest, it used to be open valley land that was farmed.
Satellite reception is somewhat spotty so we chose to climb a little to get a good lock. The cache is across the creek from the Brown Mountain Creek Shelter.
By the way, the cache name came from the realization that neither Lazarus nor I, separately, had the makings of an adequate goodie collection for the cache. So we pooled what we had and came up with a normal stash.
