Love awe inspiring views but don’t have what it takes to hike to the top of Half Dome (16 miles round trip with an elevation gain of over 4700 feet)? Cloud’s Rest seems like anything but a rest stop (Also over 16 miles with huge elevations gains)? If so, this cache is for you!
This virtual cache will take you to the top of Sentinel Dome with views that rival that of other less accessible landmarks in Yosemite. But you can drive to within a moderately easy 1.5 mile hike if you leave from the right trail head.
On the other hand, if you want a more challenging hike, you can leave from the valley floor and hike all the way to Sentinel Dome via Glacier Point. There are several trails that will get you to Glacier Point, but my favorite is 4-mile trail. This would be about a 12 mile hike with 4000 foot elevation gain.
From the coordinates, on a clear day you can see three major Yosemite landmarks at the following bearings.
- 1. 60 degrees true
- 2. 280 degrees true
- 3. 343 degrees true
To log this find, post an original picture of yourself with one of the major landmarks in the background.
Alternately, if you do not have a camera or can't get your pictures digitally, you can e-mail the answer to these questions:
1. Name the three major landmarks at the bearings given.
But that would be too easy. Anyone with a map and compass could answer those questions from home, so for the final answer:
2. DO NOT POST THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION...E-MAIL IT TO ME. Logs with the answer to this question will be deleted.
So much for the warnings... here is the final question: Describe the man made object near (not at) the coordinates that helps people identify the landmarks.(NOTE: NOT the survey benchmark disk that is also at these coordinates). If you made it to the top and spent any time looking around, the answer to this question should be very obvious)
DO NOT POST A PICTURE OF THE ANSWER TO #2!
Update 1/10/2005: This cache was part of an article in the Sacramento Bee! (Well, at least the picture of two cachers logging their 1,000 find at Sentinel Dome)
