Geocache Description:

Located in Cedarwood Recreation Area near the northern end of Pine Island State Forest. Cedarwood Meadows is public recreation land just south of the Canadian border. Some topo maps show this cache located in a small part of the Red Lake Indian Reservation, however, I assure you that this area is for public use.

NOTE: This area is very frequently wet.

The Trailhead:
Both of the following access routes lead to a picnic area, and signs denoting that the recreation area is voluntarily maintained by Jerry Anderson. The area is spartan at best, with a few picnic tables and nothing else. It is a good place to dry off and enjoy a beverage. The cache is located approximately 1/2 mile from the picnic area, and 50' from the established trail. The road depicted on the map running adjacent the cache site is not much better than a donkey trail. It is accessible a short distance from the picnic area, but gets much worse as you go, and there is no room to turn around. The cache container is a cammouflaged ammunition can. This will be the third cache container, and a great exercise in measuring the durability of caches placed in remote areas of our state - see all logs.

If you have time, this is a great area to ride your ATV, using either the picnic area or Frontier Boat Landing as a staging area.

The entire Frontier Farmer Road is a great scenic drive of about 12 Miles. Watch for wildlife as we have seen many deer, wolves, fox, and a bear from this road. There are some neat pictures in the logs of wildflowers and wildlife seen by cachers. Even a few wild cachers!

The Southern Route (6.2 miles - route distance to vehicle parking area):
The other end of Farmer's Road (vicinity N 48*37.639 / W 094* 12.748) is accessible from Koochiching County Road 88. If you are going Westbound on MN Hwy 11, you will turn left at Birchdale on Koochiching Cty Rd 4. This is paved initially, but soon turns to gravel, continue straight until Frontier Farmer Road appears on your left. This route is in great shape and suitable for any vehicle. Avoid the temptation to take the muddy turnoff that appears to go directly to the cache - You can't get there from here EVEN ON AN ATV! (We know, we've tried every year for the past several)

Northern Route (6.4 miles - route distance to vehicle parking area):
Turn south from MN Highway 11 on to Koochiching County Road 4 at the Frontier Boat Landing. Take Farmer's Road (vicinity N 48*39.39374' / W 094*16.754')- staying on the main road and turning left at the only questionable intersection. There is a grass road going straight here which leads to abandoned gravel pit. Your destination is a picnic area (vicinity N 48*35.906' / W 094*16.754').There was a washed out culvert (vicinity N 48*37.656'/ W 94*17.929') that has been repaired but the shoulder is a bit soft. This route is better if you're using an ATV, the southern route is well suited for any vehicle traffic.
