The Avenue of Flags Memorial Project was dedicated May 26, 1986 and was a project of the Fort Custer Advisory Committee. The project was funded by private contributions received from patriotic individuals and veteran service organizations, no tax dollars were used. The Avenue of Flags is composed of 152 flagpoles along the main avenue and additional 50 flagpoles arranged in a semi-circle at the head of the avenue. The 50 flagpoles fly the flags of the fifty states on special occasions such a Memorial Day. The 152 flagpoles fly the 5’ x 9.5’ burial flag of deceased veterans. The Avenue of Flags is displayed from Easter through Veterans Day each year.
All flags in the Avenue of flags are donated by the families of a deceased veteran (the burial flag that the family received at the time of death)
