Wyndham Lights 2018 Virtual Cache

This cache has been archived.

maccamob: Sadly, the lights across Wyndham have winked out for the final time, and a tradition comes to an end. We regret that we can no longer justify the work needed to keep this cache going. New guidelines now prevent multiple logging year by year for individual cachers, even though new questions and changes in some locations effectively make each appearance a new cache. Our thanks to all those cachers who left the 460 'Found It" logs over the past 16 years, and who awarded 116 Favourite Points.

Geocache Description:

You’ve heard of the Northern Lights and the Southern Lights, but have you seen the Wyndham Lights? Now in their sixteenth and final season, these unusually bright but seasonal phenomena can be seen in the night sky during December each year if you know where to look. We have carefully selected the best vantage points for you to enjoy as maccamob’s one hundred and third cache.

Sadly, revised Groundspeak guidelines only allow cachers to log this cache once. If this applies to you but you still come to see the Lights, please log a Note so we can see how many Teams attend.

These phenomena became more commonplace in previous seasons, but remained unusual enough locally to still generate considerable interest and excitement when they appeared. Recently, however, the Lights seemed to be more variable in timing, number and intensity, and they are appearing later in the season. Happily, this year, there are still plenty of excellent vantage points concentrated within a few km of maccamob HQ. This is a great tour for those with geokids, or someone special in their life, or for those who are still young at heart with a sense of wonder. You should plan to arrive at Location 1 at twilight, about 8:45 pm. Depending on how long you wish to admire the results of many hours work, and even more dollars invested, you will need about 2 hours to complete the questions. This year’s collection differs from last year. Some of the lights that flared brightly in previous years have now faded like dying supernovas, while other new constellations have appeared or returned anew.

A good satnav and/or street directory would be a useful accessory to find your way around this little constellation, and we recommend you plan your route in advance. You will also need to bring these questions, and perhaps a torch. Please note that one or two of the locations may only be visible until about 10pm on week nights, but stay visible later on weekends. Some may not appear at all in the event of inclement weather. If any location is not visible, please do not disturb the occupants but move on to the next location.

SECURITY WARNING. There have been problems at the more popular vantage points in previous years. Please lock your cars if you want to view the sights on foot, and take your valuables with you. Also, please be patient with the traffic and small children at each site.

TO LOG THIS CACHE: Please do not include your answers in your log; instead, send us your correct answers to questions for at least NINE of the locations. You may log the cache once we confirm your answers. If you have logged the Lights previously, but visit them again this year, we'd still love to read about your experience, so please log a Note.
