Upscale Dam Trolls Pot of Gold Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

MikeOtt: Hate to put down a 20 year old cache, but it has to go
1. Container so damaged it must be replaced (and new park geocaching permit)
2. The pretty waterfall at dam is gone, large pond is no more and everything is overgrown
3. I used to do hikes for State park including this area so maintained some access trails and there were mowed grass trails--all that has stopped. The relatively new paved Tri Valley trail (only current access to area) does not go near old dam area.

Geocache Description:

For the Dam Trolls on breaking 1,000 cache mark!

Update 2017 Dam has breached si its now Big Pond meadow.

There is a very secluded 10' high dam with nice waterfall that forms "Big Pond" in the Possum Hill section of White Clay Creek State Park. As origionally build it was on the massive game preserve/estate of S Hallock Du Pont. So over the years the trolls living by the dam have acquired wealth from the very rich guests of this area.

Best parking is at new county park at Rt 72 and Polly Drummond Hill Road and walk across Rt 72 and enter the White clay Creek Park. It is less than 0.2 miles to the cache. You can get to within about 200 feet of the cache while at the edge of the field. There is a cut path into the dam (Look for orange tape. Miss this path and you are deep in multiflora rose thorns. This area is a favorite stopping area for migrating geese.

Alternate parking is at Possum Hill area for a nicer longer walk. Since there are no real trail maps of this area, a aerial photo with trails marked is shown.

For the best views cross the stream and then climb up the bank to see the pond.
