This waterproof match
container cache is located near the end of a large drain that
courses its way under the city. Note the sign "For Sewer Emergency
Call" on the metal door that’s in the area. The drain begins about
a mile away at Liberty Park with a gaping pair of square holes. It
started out as a single roundish hole but was modified some decades
ago. [See the cache called
I'm Drained 1.
The history of this drain
follows: In the early 1900s, Waterloo people, tired of cleaning up
after floods, decided to enclose Dry Run Creek in a large storm
sewer. To celebrate its completion, in October of 1903 the Iowa
League of Municipalities held its annual banquet within the sewer,
which now has been converted into a drain. The sewage flows via a
tube within the drain. A faded image of it is shown to the left
here. Guests entered at points between Randolph and Wellington and
found a sumptuous feast laid for 400. See the image I've uploaded.
I have heard that those that were dining were serenaded by the
echoes of music being played by a band—also in the tube with them.
I imagine the tune would have been a bit hard to follow and talk
about surround sound!
This is near the spot where,
every year I watch the fireworks from during the "My Waterloo Days"
celebration. It's also near here by the "little dam" that I
remember catching 4 to 6 inch bullheads two at a time even on a
bare hook!
Make sure to place it back
where it was. It's magnetic.
