Update from Shaver's Creek. Shaver's Creek no longer has an
admission fee (admission is free to the public), and they are open
to the public from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily from February to the
beginning of December. Although the staff is unable to answer
questions about geocaches, they can answer questions about the
Center and the area immediately surrounding it, so visitors should
feel free to give them a call at (814) 863-2000. Shaver's Creek has
free and open "Meet the Birds" shows in their Raptor Center from
2:00 to 4:00 PM on most Saturdays and Sundays from March to
November (all are welcome, but groups of 10 or more should call the
center at least 3 days in advance to make sure that they're fully
prepared).
Now for the cache. Access this cache from the Lake Trail around
Lake Perez. During migration, Lake Perez is a good spot to observe
waterfowl, and you might see loons, grebes, geese, swans, and
ducks—including, of course, hooded mergansers! Herons,
terns, sandpipers, osprey, eagles, and kingfishers also frequent
the lake.
You can park at Shaver's
Creek, or at
Stone Valley
Recreation Area,. We enjoy this area a great deal--in the
summer with binoculars and in the winter with snowshoes. Bring a
picnic and make a day of your visit here!
