Geocache Description:

Early on paved road, middle muddy trail mostly level, end muddy trail up/down steep narrow ridge. Trail was last cleared on 20 May 2007.

This cache is only for the hardy. Although it is only a 6/7 mile round trip, it takes a lot to finish. The cache is in plain sight once you climb to the top of Pu`u O`Kila. There are two ridges that lead to the peak. One is the makai ridge which when you are on top looks like it runs straight down the valley toward the ocean. The other is the north ridge. To get to the bottom of the north ridge you have to hike in for about 1 hour along trails on the right/north side of the valley. The trail was cleared on April 4th 2004 and will not be cleared again for about one year. Right now it is well ribboned with new orange ribbons and a variety of old multi colored ribbons. We have had a lot of rain and the trail is very muddy. Take no children as there are some very steep ridges to climb with long drop offs on both sides. The trail is pretty well vegetated and so you are never looking down bare cliffs. In the upper sections the trail is about 1 foot wide on a ridge about 2 feet wide. Again there is vegetation all the way up and down both ridges w/lots of hand holds. When you look up at Pu`u O`Kila from below it looks like it is a very small sharp peak. That is an illusion. It is the trees growing on the top that gives it the pyramid shape. That’s not to say the top is big, but it is flat for about 25/30 feet. But it is only a few feet wide. There are a few great views from the top but most directions you look all you will see are the trees on the top.Good luck.
