Geocache Description:

Noin 11 000 vuotta sitten mannerjään reuna pysähtyi nykyisen Imatran alueelle vuosisadoiksi ja muokkasi tämän mahtavan maiseman.

During Ice Age, 11,000 years ago, the retreating glacier stopped for centuries here, what is today known as Imatra, and created this magnificent landscape.

Kun jäätikkö pysähtyi, sulavasta jäästä lohkesi suuria kimpaleita, jotka hautautuivat soran alle. Niiden sulaessa syntyi harjukuoppia eli suppia - ja tämä kätkö vie sinut sellaiseen. Suppa-kumpumaasto on tyypillistä Lammassaaressa sekä sen läheisyydessä Ukonniemen alueella. Saari on toiminut lampaiden kesälaitumena. Siitä nimi Lammassaari. Nykyisin Lammassaari on luonnonkaunis ulkoilijoiden, retkeilijöiden ja veneilijöiden virkistysalue - nyt myös geokätköilijöiden. Suppien jyrkät rinteet luovat erikoisen kasvuympäristön eliöille. Supan pienilmastoa luonnehtivat rinteiden jyrkät lämpötila- ja valaistuserot sekä pohjan kostea, viileä ja vakaa kellari-ilmasto. Niiden eri osissa esiintyy selviä kasvillisuusvyöhykkeitä vaihtelevissa kasvuoloissa. Koeta pysyä poluilla niin pitkään kuin mahdollista, ettei muu maasto kulu liikaa.

Kivikautisia asuinpaikkoja on Lammassaaresta löydetty kaksi, voit vierailla myös niissä. Esihistorialliset asuinpaikat on rauhoitettu muinaismuistolain perusteella, eikä maata saa kaivaa.

Ajo-ohjeet: Aja Lammassaarentietä Kylpylän ohitse ja yli patotien. Lammassaaressa on useita pysäköintialueita, voit myös pysäköidä tien varteen. Voit myös käyttää Kylpylää tukikohtanasi ja vaikka “pysäköidä” lapset sinne. Täällä ei tarvita edes parkkikiekkoa. Lammassaareen ei saa ajaa 24-05 välisenä aikana, voit jättää auton silloin Kylpylälle tai satamaan.

Kätkö on pyöreä valkoinen litran muovipurkki jossa virallinen “Geocache” -tarra. ÄLÄ NOSTELE JA KAIVELE SAMMALTA, sitä ei tarvitse tehdä. Kätkö on mahdoton löytää talvella lumen alta.

When the ice sheet stopped here, enormous chunks of ice were buried into the gravel of newborn hillocks. The ice melting away, huge pits called “suppa” remained - and that’s where you have to go to find this cache. “Suppa” pits are noticeable in the landscape of Lammassaari Island (Island of the Lamb - Lamb used to be herded here, therefore it’s name). Today Lammassaari Island is a recreation center for all outdoor people - like geocachers. The steep slopes of the “suppa” pits create a miraculous inhabitat for many life forms. In the micro climate of a pit, huge differences in the amount of light and temperature occur on the slopes, while there is a stable cellar-like climate on the bottom. Getting there, try to stay on the paths as long as possible. While hiking, you are free to pick berries and mushrooms, angle for fish, walk on the beaches and swim. But don’t harass any seals, birds or bird nests, don’t harm any trees, don’t pick up any dried branches, twigs or moss.

You can also visit two Stone Age dwelling sites on Lammassaari Island. Prehistoric dwelling sites are protected, so don’t start shoveling here.

Driving directions: Take “Lammassaarentie”-road towards the Imatran Kylpylä Spa but drive past the Spa towards Lammassaari, across the dike path. Cars can park along the road and in the parking lots. You may also use the Spa as your base and “park” your children there. You don't even need the parking disc here. You are forbidden to drive to Lammassaari between midnight and 5 am, but you can park at Spa or Marina if you happen to be there at night.

The cache is a round white 1 liter plastic canister with “Official Geocache” -logo. Please, do not break the moss cover of the ridge or the stones. This cache is impossible to find in winter when there’s snow.

Original contents are: a smiling Buddha, an official Geocaching pin, an official Geocaching cache sticker and a suitcase strap. Logbook, pencil and stash note.
