Geocache Description:

This cache completes our Baltimore Inner Harbor caching crescent. Since this is on National Park Service property, it must be a Virtual Cache. You need not need pay the admission price to do this cache ($5.00 for adults 17 and over). In fact there are lots of neat things to see and do outside of the Fee Area including the movie at the visitor center. Our goal is to get out-of-towners (and some recalcitrant in-towners) to get over to this part of the city.

This huge monument is the second-most asked about item (after 'where is the bathroom') at Ft McHenry. It is not easily missed and worth the short walk. It is a statue of Orpheus, the Greek mythological hero of music and poetry and supposedly, the inventor of the Lyre, hence the questions that follow. How this fits into Francis Scott Key and the Fort is rather dubious!

There is a nearby sea-wall walk around the entire fort that is well worth the trip. To be sure visitors don't skip the main attraction, we also ask a question that requires going to the Fort.

This cache is part of a crescent walking tour of downtown Baltimore that we created for visitors and other cachers. It is under 2 miles from Top of the Hill (Federal Hill) on the south side of the Inner Harbor. You could do 5 of our caches on this leg-2 virtual, 3 real.

It is probably best to stick to daylight hours if walking. There is a nearby Water Taxi for easy access from the Inner Harbor. This is a 2-part (3 question) cache. To get credit for this cache, email the owners:

1) How many strings are on the Lyre in the main sculpture?
2) How many strings are on the Lyre in the in the woman's hands in the relief below?
3) At N 39 15.790, W 076 34.741, how many cannons (not balls) are present? (You do NOT need to pay for access to this point.)

For more info about the siginificance of this statue, see: (visit link) and (visit link)

There seems to be some confusion about the sign saying this is a fee area. No admission is required to do this cache. The fee is required only to Enter the actual fort. The following is taken off of the NPS web site:
Details - Entrance fees cover admission to the historic fort. Grounds and Visitor Center are no charge areas.
