Geocache Description:

You are seeking for a geocache hidden on a very old dam on the northern side of Nash Lake in Calais, Maine. Seekers with children should use care. Slippery rocks and drop off greater than 20 feet.

Well, after 2 years of seeking Geocaches, I have finally decided to hide one. A good friend and coworker (Claude) suggested this area. I have not been able to find any information on this old dam. It has been told that it was built in the 1850’s. There is a small area near by that the City of Calais maintains. From what I have seen so far, mostly people riding ATV’s visit this location. I plan on doing some research and posting here the history of this well hidden treasure. Directions:You can reach this location one of two ways; by boat or car/4WD. By boat using the public launch on the south eastern side of Nash Lake. Boat ramp can be reached by Shattuck Rd, off Rt. 1. By Car, from Rt 1. seek out Hardscrabble Rd. When the pavement ends, stop if in a car and park here (N45 08.861 W067 13.865) You will have to hike the rest (little over 1.8 miles one way). If you have 4WD with fair clearance continue straight on the dirt. The dirt road is not too bad, but there are at least two locations where a car would bottom out. There is also one rather steep hill, that could cause some problems on your way back out. This road is not plowed in the winter. When you reach the dam use care on the rocks, some are slipper and moss covered. Also there is a pretty good drop opposite of the water. And don’t forget the bug dope!! Enjoy the visit!!
Initial Items placed in Ammo Box:Delorme Topo USA (DVD-ROM), Delorme Eartha Explorer (DVD-ROM), U.S. Navy Submarine Belt Buckle, Emergency light/ reflector, U.S. Border Patrol Pin, Geocaching Button, OntheGo Trash Bags, Eartha Marble, Sunscreen sample, Burger King Talking Watch (Homer Simpson), & Rite in the Rain log book w/ 2 pens.

***(05-27-05 Please use care while searching, with all the rain we have had this spring the rocks are very slippery and the water level is higher than last year. Also you do not need to flip any large rocks while seeking. I would suggest searching the whole damn and reference the photos and/or Hints if need be. I noticed some larger rocks moved since my last visit, not sure if this was from ice on the lake over the winter or visiting geochacers. Thanks!!***
