Geocache Description:

Welcome to "Birkley's Bend" cache. A very beautiful scenic drive any time of the year (especially in the fall). This cache is an easy walk from the parking area.

The cache is located near a parking lot off of the "Loess Hills Scenic Highway". Birkley's Bend has been restored from row crop farming to native grasses and is a nature area typical of Iowa bottom land next to a river. Target and trap shooting are no longer allowed in this area. There will be typical wildlife and pests in this area depending on the season. Be aware that there is WIRE in the area. Don't trip over it, as it is located sparingly around the cache area. Cache is in a small plastic jar that has a screw on lid and is >5" tall and about a 5" diameter. Happy Caching! IMKENNY
Additional information: There is an old abandoned bridge (about 1/4 mile South of this cache) that collapsed into the Iowa side of the Big Sioux River on Tuesday, January 3, 2006. This 320 foot long bridge is in Section 32 of Sioux Township on vacated 483rd Avenue. It is still there and is located about 200 (+/-) yards downstream along the river bank. This bridge was known as the "Old Jefferson Bridge", the "Hunter Bridge", the "White Bridge", the "Last Twin Bridge" and the "Birkley Bridge". It was built in 1915 and was vacated by the state on October 2, 1967. I drove across this bridge in 1990 and that was a scary experience.
