Geocache Description:

This cache is located in an Environmentally Sensitive Area of upland Wales. The rights of access to the site extend to walkers; cyclists and horses can approach very closely. Motorbikes and other vehicles are not allowed to use the Monk's Trod under any circumstances.

The centre of mainland Wales lies just a stone’s throw from one of the ancient trackways that still cross what have been called the Green Desert. Almost a millennium ago Cistercian monks commonly wandered these empty hills. They founded one of their monasteries in what is now modern day Radnorshire at Abbey Cwmhir in 1143. Ystrad Fflur (Strata Florida) in Ceredigion was founded in 1164. Linking the two houses lies ‘The Monk’s Trod’ crossing the Cambrian Mountains and the Wye valley as it heads over these barren, peaceful uplands. Today the monks have gone, but the track remains, over mile upon undulating mile of sensitive upland plateau as it crosses the welsh watershed.Even in these days of Gore-Tex and GPS it is not a place to be in foul weather. Crossing the hills in woollen and linen robes in the mist or worse must have been a serious undertaking for those devoted men all those years ago. 'Dacw y llynnoedd yng nghesail creigiau,Yn union fel yr oeddent gynt:Y praidd rhwng twmpathau,Y grugieir mewn plasau,A'r nerfus hwyaden yn ffoi ar ei hynt'. W. Teifi Jones, Cylchau Teifi,'Llynnoedd Teifi' (1971)Navigate your way to Llynnoedd Teifi (The Teifi Pools). The cache itself is easily found a few metres from the geographic centre of mainland Wales, as defined by the Ordnance Survey. The ground at the cache site is high, open and boggy moorland. There is a strong possibility that your feet will get wet, whichever approach you choose to reach the cache. The original contents of the cache.Pencil and sharpenerMedical tapeTea lightPosh red candleWhistleBlue Peter badgeFossil sea urchinSealed bottle of sparkling waterStickersMarker penEnjoy, Ambrose
