Geocache Description:

Historic American Revolution site

In late 1775, Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen were picked to lead expeditions to attack the British in what is now Quebec, Canada. Allen's expedition to Montreal was a success, but Arnold's trek to Quebec City was plagued by misfortune. On September 25, Leaving Fort Western in what is now Maine's capital Augusta, Arnold proceeded up the Kennebec River in poorly constructed bateau hoping to descend the Chaudiere River in Quebec. At Caratunk Falls in Solon, he was forced to portage. To commemorate this stop, a monument with bronze plaque was erected on the banks of the Kennebec. Arnold eventually reached the banks of the St. Lawrence River on November 6. (Note the condition of the plaque at the monument). Update May 15, 2005: Because several people have said that this is a hard cache to find, I've upgraded the difficulty. Once you've found it you'll say "Duh!", but it is hard to find. This cache also serves as a parking spot for the WhereRWe? personal TB. If listed, it is NOT in the cache - it stays in my pocket. UPDATE Sep 13, 2005: Double checked coordinates based on recent logs. My GPS had me within ONE foot, so I'll stick withthe original coordinates. WATCH FOR POISON IVY, which was not there when I placed the cache.
UPDATE Nov 21, 2005. Again verified coordinates w/2 GPSr's.
