September 17-19, 2004 brought the remnants of hurricane Ivan up to Northwestern Pennsylvania.
This "10 year" storm caused a washout of the lower portion of route 5 at Elk Creek. PennDot decided to repair the road in such a way that should prevent a reoccurrence of this washout. I was very impressed with the rebuilt road and hope you will enjoy seeing it also. This area is just east of the newest state park in the state,Lake Bluffs State Park, which will be developed over the next several years.
Parking: no parking on public land is available at the washout site. Parking may be found on the west side of the hill where North Creek Road meets route 5. N42 01.000 W80 21.879 Their are "bike lanes" on both sides of the highway which should be adequate for access to the cache unless they are covered with snow. Parking on the east side of the hill can be found at the Elk Creek Sports Store.
