Geocache Description:

Estes Point: This is one of the locations included on the Great River Road Passage (GRRP) series of caches. Click here to see map. (Additional details about the GRRP series is given further below in the description.)

Estes Point is marked by a flag high on a rock outcropping (don’t worry, the cache is not way up there) at the tip of the Turkey River Mounds State Preserve. Much of the preserve is a narrow rocky ridge with steep slopes and bluffs on both sides which overlooks where the Turkey River empties into the Mississippi River. The preserve is a 62-acre area containing 38 ceremonial and burial Indian mounds which were built between 500 B.C. and 900 A.D. Turn East onto Estes Point Road (NOT Estes Ridge Road) from Highway 52 just north of Millville (see additional waypoint). This becomes a B-level maintenance road and can be subject to flooding during heavy Spring rains and Winter thaws. Parking is available at the end of the road near the railroad tracks. The cache is not far from the road and does not require climbing any of the bluffs. Container is a plastic lock n lock container containing an assortment of puzzles as starting cache items since the reason for the Indians’ mounds remain a puzzle yet today. (It is not a themed cache; just a fun way to start.) Please return the container to its hiding place.
