Nodding Off Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

BluePearl: We are archiving this cache because the cache itself has disappeared for the second time. Also, there is a nearby letterbox that people have been mistaking for the cache. Goodbye, "Nodding Off"--our first cache planted! Sad to see you go.

Geocache Description:

In a popular Southeast Denver urban park.

Due to recent tree trimming at the cache site, we have moved the cache slightly, and have had to resort to a smaller container (sorry, it's a nano now).

The cottage near this cache was the home of poet and newspaperman Eugene Field. (You can find a brochure about him on the porch.) The cottage, which once stood on West Colfax Avenue right across from the Denver Mint, was saved from destruction by Margaret Tobin Brown (yes, that’s the Unsinkable Molly Brown) and placed here at the cache site, where it served as a branch of the Denver Library for a while.

Take a moment to visit the statue just north of the cottage, commemorating one of Field’s best-known poems. Although the poem’s official name is “Dutch Lullaby,” you may know it by the name of the three children described in the first lines: “Wynken, Blynken and Nod one night/ Sailed off in a wooden shoe.” Our informal survey indicates that if you’re younger than a baby boomer, you may be unfamiliar with this poem. We encourage you to look it up, especially if you know children who love being read to.
