Geocache Description:

This Earthcache is a continuation of the excellent Wombles Earthcache set above the A4 Devizes to Marlborough Road which is an absolute must do cache. With this one, you can park very close to the site and is more of a cache and dash than the Wombles one.

This National Nature Reserve has 25000 Sarsen stones which have been dropped here by the retreating glaciers after the last Ice Age. These are known as Glacial Erratics and are the best collection of Sarsen Stones in Great Britain.

These Sarsen boulders are the remnants of a sandstone deposit that formed on the chalk over 30 million years ago. Root holes can be seen from plants grew when the deposit was still soft sand. Later under a colder climate the sandstone was broken up by ice and water. Sarsens were locally known as 'Grey Wethers' due to their resemblance to sheep and were used as building material for over 5 thousand years since the earliest prehistoric monuments. To claim the cache go to the above coordinates where you will find a information board. On the reverse side of the board E-Mail me the last 3 numbers in the bottom right hand corner.

Whilst in the area please do our 'Chocolate Box Cottage ' cache which was originally going to be the Earthcache until we found out you could not actually place a physical cache as an Earthcache. Consequently it is a seperate cache.
