Stanley's Ford Garage on the Yellowstone Trail Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Wis Kid: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

The old Yellowstone Garage that sold and serviced Fords still stands, right on the historic Yellowstone Trail. The building is private property, now used by Roy-L Auto Transfer. Next door is the old implement dealership, that has signs that it latter became the "new" Yellowstone Garage. This multi will take you to both the old and the "new" Yellowstone Garage. Both garages and the depot are private property, and you can see all clues easily from the street.

At the coordinates above, you will see the Yellowstone Garage, built in 1916. I have a photo of the Ford Garage, that I hope to post, that was taken in 1921. Clarence Solie rented the Ford Garage from George Broughton. Both Fords and Jewett cars were sold here, and all types of cars were serviced here. The garage provided winter storage for batteries, when the cars would be put up on blocks. The building was also used to store cream, and then taken across the street to the depot for shipment to Chicago when the train came.

Next door, you will find the implement dealership (the "new Yellowstone Garage" at:

44.57.593
90.56.063

And across the street from the Ford garage, you will see the decaying remains of the old Stanley Depot, once the center of this town. Currently the depot is used for storage. The land the depot is on is part of the city's Soo Park, and the city has plans to restore the old depot, though work has not yet started. On the corner of Soo Park, notice the canon, pointed directly at the bank.

The final is in beautiful Chapman Park, which is on the land once used to process lumber on a mill pond. Enter Chapman Park at:

44.57.768
90.56.821

Those coordinates will take you to a chain saw artist's statue of a bald eagle.

Find the final cache at:

44.57.ABC
90.56.DEF

A = The third digit of the "new" Yellowstone garage's street address
B = 3
C = The number of chainsaw critters you can see from the eagle
D = The third digit of the old Yellowstone Ford garage's street address
E = The number of windows on the north side of the depot with curved tops
F = The sum of all the digits in the street address of the old Yellowstone Ford garage

The route of the Yellowstone Trail, pretty much follows what is now highway X in this area. In Stanley, the trail came in on the north side of the tracks, entering Stanley at the intersection of Franklin Streeet and First Street, then turned left on Broadway, and went south, then west on what is now highway X.

The stretch of highway from Stanley to the North Fork River (going east from Stanley) was infamous during the spring mud season. About 1/4 mile from town, the road had to be "corduroyed," that is, logs were laid down crosswise to provide a surface to drive on. This made for a bumpy ride. Even so, many cars got stuck in the mud. Each spring, local farmers would bring their horse teams and spend the day pulling out motorists from the muddy mire. The usual fee was one dollar if the team of horses could hook onto the car before the mud hole, or two dollars if the motorist had foolishly drove all the way into the mud hole.

This is one of several caches I have placed along the route of the historic Yellowstone Trail. More information on the Yellowstone Trail, including maps can be found at
