Geocache Description:

Overlooks Lake Michigan, Difficult Cache, Camouflage Container, Can Be Hidden In Many Places Within Area

The importance of this cache is its view of an old shipwreck just east of the New Port Shores Restaurant. The shipwreck is the Toledo, a 179 foot, double decked steam screw ship home ported out of Buffalo New York. The ship was built in 1854 out of wood and anchored in Port Washington on October 22nd, 1856 due to bad weather. The ship’s anchor did not hold allowing the ship to collide with an underwater bolder reef near the shore. The ship quickly went down with 42 lives lost. The wreck remains in 20 feet of water on the Port Washington waters easily within sight of the shore. Water visibility on the wreck ranges from 10-50 feet all depending on the waves and current weather.
