On the 30th of September a group of Northern Cheyenne appeared on Sappa Creek, at about nine o’clock in the morning. They scattered up and down the stream for ten miles, to within a few miles of Oberlin. They murdered seventeen unarmed men, outraged two girls, took horses, plundered houses and destroyed their contents. The next morning they appeared on Beaver Creek to murder fourteen more men in Rawlins County. This was the Last Indian Raid on Kansas Soil. You will be close to the Decatur County Last Indian Raid Museum, which commemorates this event. The story is told in video form in the museum’s Native American room. The Museum also represents a celebration of prairie life. It is a very impressive collection with fourteen buildings, most with historical importance. These include an 1886 depot, 1885 jail, grocery store, sod house, one room country school, doctor’s office, land office, livery, filling station, Bohemian Hall, and an 1888 church. There are also two large exhibit buildings, which house the period rooms. Some of the displays include: a library, general store, photography, music room, military, barber shop, toys, millinery, barbed wire collection, and quilt collection. The museum hours are from 9 a.m. – Noon and 1:00 – 4:30 p.m. Tuesday – Friday April 20th – October 17th . From October 17th until April the business office is open only Tuesday –Thursday 10 a.m. – Noon and 1:00 – 4:30 p.m. Enjoy downtown Oberlin with its brick streets while caching.
