Geocache Description:

Explore an abandoned section of old I-395

PARKING/ACCESS - PLEASE READ

There are two good ways to get to this cache. One way is to park at the North end of the 395 segment and (J-Walk) crossing a sometimes very busy Pomerado Road, or park at the South end of the 395 segment, and make a short climb up a non-obvious trail section. Note: There is a wide shoulder right off Pomerado road within a few hundred feet of the cache, but it is posted as No Parking.

NORTH ACCESS
Park on Stonemill Dr., and carefully cross Pomerado Road. Once across Pomerado, make your way down a short, steep bank where you should see the 395 segment heading to the South. The nice thing about this access is that you can walk the entire remaining 395 segment, but please be careful!

SOUTH ACCESS
Park where Creek Road meets Beeler Canyon Road, East of the cache location. Bushwacking is not required, so if you find yourself wishing you had a machette with you, go back and look for a better way. The start of the trail up from parking might not be obvious so I've listed the trail head coordinates below. After a very short climb through ankle high grass, you'll enter a cleared, rocky area. Head to the SW (left) and look for a rockpile for the start of the next trailhead. At the short pampas grass, head to the NW (right) up to the remnants of I-395. There is a barking dog in the top house nearest the cache and my route takes you away from this house as much as possible. I don't know these people, and I don't want to antagonize them, so please use stealth. I'd guess the walk should be about 5-10 minutes to the cache site from parking. Have Fun!

Inspired by the recent cache placements by the Senior Sleuths "Old 395" Cache and GRNZOOM's "Taking a Drive on Old 395" series of caches, I wanted to learn more and I started reading a bit online about the interesting history of Highway 395. I knew that the Pre-1950 alignment of Highway 395 closely follows what is Pomerado road today from the I-15 off ramp in Scripps Ranch North to just South of Lake Hodges near Escondido. What I didn't know, and was excited to learn, was that a 1/4 mile stretch of old 395 remains, abandonded, just South of Poway as a result of the Pomerado Road realignment. I've made a couple of trips to walk this section and thought it would be a good place to leave a cache so others can stroll along this ruined stretch of historic road right under our noses.
