Fortress Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Red90: Well. I must say I'm surprised this one lasted this long. There really are no good hiding places up at the summit. The cache has gone walkabout and I won't be able to get up there this season, so it is best to let it go.

Geocache Description:

This regular cache is located on the summit of "The Fortress". The Fortress is a 3000 m peak in Kananaskis country.

This hike is one of my all time favourites. I just had to haul a cache to the top with me.

The normal route to "The Fortress" is via Headwall lakes. This route is also my suggested approach. The mountain can also be reached via Chester lake, but the scree on that side is much better for a descent than an ascent. I also feel that the views are much better on the Headwall lake approach. My suggestion is to make a loop and descend via Chester lake. It really gives the best views for both routes in that direction. This loop is around 18.5 km long and the elevation gain from the parking lot to the summit is 1100 meters.

Both routes are very well described in Gillian Daffern's "Kananaskis Country Trail Guide, Volume 1" and also in Alan Kane's "Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies". I would suggest reading one or the other for a detailed trail description.

Please be prepared for a moderately long hike with rough off trail travel. Good quality and sturdy footwear is a must. Route finding is needed especially on the Headwall lake side. A compass and topographical map are highly suggested.

You can get a copy of my track log here: (visit link)

Please note that due to snow when we went that we did not always follow the "normal" route. Keep this in mind if using my track.

Cache is now a regular sized Lock and Lock painted gray.
