Geocache Description:

The above coords will take you to an information gazebo in the 'heart' of Bamfield. There isnt much to the town but have a look around then return to the West Coast Trail parking lot and enjoy some time on the beach at Pachena Bay; one of the most beautiful places on Vancouver Island.

Find the answers to the following questions at the gazebo, then complete the formula to find the cache ~ hidden at the base of a tree with a small piece of pink flagging to help mark the location!

  • A What year was William Eddy Banfield first employed in the area?
  • B How many species of Pacific Northwest Salmon are there?
  • C What number indicates the location of the West Coast Trail on the map?
  • D How many Fly Agaric mushrooms are pictured?
  • E How many people live in Bamfield?
  • F What year was map location #7 constructed?
  • G How many Salal Berries are pictured?
  • H What year did the Bamfield Cable station become the terminus of a 4000 mile underwater communication system?
  • I How many pounds are salmon when when they return to their birthplace?
  • J How many bird species are pictured?
  • K How many months do alevins grow under water?

  • Bearing to cache = (H - F) x B - D
  • Distance to cache = A - (E x K) - (I x J) - (C + G)
Historical note: The town was initially known as Banfield's Creek but when the name was changed it was mis-spelled in the official documents... and Banfield himself was guilty of a spelling mistake when he recorded the explorer Captain Barkley's name as Barclay!

Happy Caching :)
