Geocache Description:

This is basically a park and grab cache. You will not need to go onto the property itself. Several cachers have said the overhead power lines cause GPS problems--so be aware of that.

As the legend goes, the people who started "Six Flags over Texas" (and, later, other carnival attractions like "Six Flags over Georgia", "Six Flags of Mid-America") wanted to start their first park in Abilene, Texas, where I grew up. But the town fathers didn't think it would ever amount to anything, so they turned them down. The 6FoT people located their amusement park in Arlington and the rest, as they say, is history. Realizing later that they had been boneheads, the town fathers decided to compete with 6FoT by opening Old Abilene Town. Old Abilene Town was to be an amusement park based on an old west theme. It was going to have a main street like on the western movies, surrounded by rollercoasters, ferris wheels, and other amusement attractions.

In 1966, Old Abilene Town was opened at this location by the Casey family. It consisted of a major steakhouse with live melodramas and western acts, a coffee shop, and a old timey 1880's type town. It included stagecoach and horseback rides, a sheriff with street gun fights, rodeo arena, and one of the largest Southwest history museums in Texas called the American Heritage Museum. The museum burned in 1977 and closed down the park. The park opened briefly again in the early 80's and then burned some more and finally was bulldozed. The cache is located close to the foundation of the old Golden Stagecoach restaurant. Container is small camo medicine bottle. There is room for a log, pencil, and small swag. Container originally contained a coin from India, small rubber frog, WWJD pin, bugs bunny magnet, I love NY button and dice.
