Geocache Description:

This event is part of the First Annual International EarthCache Day during Earth Science Week. Visit Pope Farm Park...a couple hundred feet of ice...here? ...just 12,000 years ago? Come and talk to a geologist and learn about this unusual town park.

Join us to learn about the Earth during Earth Science Week at 1:00 p.m.
Pope Farm Park - A public educational facility of the Town of Middleton, this park provides a unique perspective on the geological setting just "up ice" of the Late Wisconsin Johnstown Moraine marking the furthest extent of the Wisconsin Glaciation in the area. An amphitheater of interpretive signs describes this geologic setting and, on a clear day, dramatic views of lakes, creeks, and glacial landforms abound. The site rests at the conjunction of three watersheds.
A geologist of the WGNHS will be onsite to provide additional information, answer questions, and offer his own perspective on this most unusual town park. Please do not disturb the rocks in the stone wall, constructed out of the variety of large rocks carried within ice that was once hundreds of feet thick ice along the glacial margin. Park in the lower parking lot and walk a short distance north to the amphitheater.

EarthCaches are a very special form of educational geocache which take geocachers to locations and teach them about some fascinating aspect of our Earth. While EarthCaches follow all the same principles and guidelines of geocaching, they have additional guidelines that developers must follow to ensure that the EarthCache provides real and valuable lessons to those who visit them. These guidelines can be found at www.earthcache.org.
