Alder Falls is located just south of Big Bay and Lake Independence.
Driving North on Big Bay Rd and just a few miles before Big Bay, pass Mattis Rd, which is on your right. Immediately take the sandy road on the West side of the road almost opposite Mattis Rd. If your car's clearance allows it, take this road, marked Alder Creek Truck Trail on some maps, for about a half mile till you come to a very small open area on your left and an even smaller area on your right.
Park in either area and take the trail to the falls which starts at the smaller, right-hand parking area at N 46* 46.905 W 87* 42.281. You should see a sign fairly high in a tree directly above the trail saying "No motorized vehicles or litter please". The short trail winds its way to the bottom of the main falls. Cross Alder Creek and follow it upstream for a number of smaller falls before coming to the cache site.
Although we’ve never come upon anyone camping here under the pines, there is certainly evidence that people do and also plenty of room. Exercise caution on the trails and on the slippery rocks, supervise kids, practice CITO… you know the drill.
Cache was replaced on July 14, 2013 with a medium size lock-n-lock container. PLEASE camouflage it well when re-hiding. Thanks!
