Geocache Description:

Cache is not at listed coordinates.
Coordinates are for the virtual 1st stage of an offset-cache. The elevation is 146 feet above sea level.

Coords can't be reached by boat or car. There is only one path that reaches this point; you must be on foot or bicycle.

You will cover at least 2.2 miles and a total elevation change of at least 100 feet to complete this cache.

The virtual stage is a viewpoint first traversed by Frank Farrington in August of 1876. It is estimated that over 10,000 spectators gathered to watch his historic achievement. When he reached the approximate location of these coordinates, hundreds of ships in the river blew their steam whistles to celebrate. He did not spend much time here, but waved his hat and hurried on with his journey.

This viewpoint has been called, "...one of the two or three most soul-stirring spots in America, like standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon".

On your way to this historic viewpoint, you must gather some information. Today, there is a path that includes this viewpoint. You can start at either the East or West end, and waypoints for these "trailheads" are listed below. You will find the information you need among the many informative plaques and signs along the way.
Thousands of people use this path on nice days. During rush hour there will be many commuters. There are always many tourists and lots of law enforcement officials.

Beware of speeding bicycles!
Bicyclists: Police will ticket reckless bicycling.

The cache is not on this path. You must follow directions to discover the final cache location. The cache is in a public area at another historic viewpoint. No need to break any laws, cross any private property, climb any fences, or get wet to find it. You may however, have to engage in a little urban adventuring to get to the coordinates for Stage 2.

While making your way to the listed coordinates, answer these questions:

1)-Who was Frank Farrington? What did he do in 1876? What route did he follow?

2)-According to the plaque showing the lower Manhattan skyline, what 2 piers were closest to St. Pauls?
---Add the numbers of the two piers together and multiply the answer by six. Subtract the answer from the last 3 digits of the listed latitude.

3)-How many Trustees' names are listed after Thomas Hitchcock on the Trustees plaque?
---Subtract again from the last 3 digits of the latitude. This gives you the Stage 2 latitude.

4)-According to the plaque showing the Brooklyn skyline, what landmark is below the Cadman Plaza Towers?
---Add up the number of letters in the name, then subtract the answer from the listed longitude. This is the Stage 2 longitude.

You now have the coordinates for Stage 2.

Near the Stage 2 coordinates you will find a plaque with the year 1877 listed on it. From this plaque you can see a sundial, less than 2 NYC blocks away.

Stand next to the sun dial. Looking through the center of the sundial, find the highest, Western most point of Frank Farrington's trip in 1876. Line that point up with the center of the sundial. As you look through the center of the sun dial at that point, the cache is no farther than 60 feet directly behind you.
Remember that stealth is required here, this area may seem quiet, but muggles appear frequently and quickly.

Don't forget to bring pen and paper.

And please, replace cache exactly where it was, with camouflage back in place.
