Visiting any Earth Cache is more than just "Logging A Find". It is
an "Earth Science Lesson", and I hope you will enjoy mine.
The "floating" dock trail is a unique way to observe the
Bishop's Bog Preserve.
Please stay on the floating dock trail at all
times. No smoking is allowed in the bog area. You might consider
wearing rubber boots!
Peat bogs normally occur on low plains or valley floors. They
are formed by the decaying plant material in an area where fresh
water is only obtained by rainfall. The flat topography inhibits
drainage of the water. The high water table causes poor aeration of
the soil and a build up of acidity, which slows the decaying
process. Because the decaying process is slower than the plant
growth, mounds can form. This process after continuing thousands of
years builds up plant material sometimes many feet deep. Due to the
wet and acidic environmental conditions, one of the most common
plants found in peat bogs are Sphagnum Mosses.

Before
logging this EarthCache, you need to complete the
following:
1.Determine the Ph of the water that is present. There are
inexpensive strips/test kits available at many nearby pet/aquarium
stores, hot tub/swimming pool merchants and general merchandise
stores.
2. E-mail me thru my profile, your Ph result.
3.On the cache page, post a picture of yourself/group showing
your GPS’r and the Ph strip/test kit with the bog in the
background.
Failure to meet these requirements will delete
your log without notice.
