1630: Hiked up to get some pictures with Flat Stanley. For those who don;t know who Flat Stanley is,he a charachter in a childrens books who get flattened and hide in an envelope and get mailed around the world. School kids read the book then make their own Flat Stanley's and send them to freinds & relatives in other cities who then take them around and take pictures. When Flat Stanley returns the kid put their Stanley's and pitures on abig map and write stories about the thins Flat Stanley saw. Well my Godson Matthew in Lynbrook , NY sent me his Flat Stanley. Today I gave him the 50 cent tour of Tempe, including a hike up Tempe Butte. Didn;t have my GPS, but this one is pretty obvious, don't you think. The attached picture was taken about 1/2 way up near the ASU "A". Also looked for the triangulation station Based on the description in my PDA, but couldn't find it. Next time up, I'll have elctronic help.

TEMPE SALT R PROJECT RADIO TWR recovered as described. NGS listing shows this as an 'elevated tank' while it is in fact an open lattice tower structure with antennae mounted on it. On 'A' Mountain (also known as Tempe Butte) with distinctive letter 'A' on west side of butte below tower, facing the University Stadium.

Found with my daughter, easy find I wasn't sure if this was a BM or not so I took the pic and came home and checked. DU2173 is inside the locked gate so that one is not going to be got by me. I can't beleive I've lived no more than 10 miles from this for over 30 years and never climbed it! More views to come soon.

1/1/1963 by CGS (FIRST OBSERVED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1963 (CAA) THE SALT RIVER PROJECT, TEMPE BASE STATION, RADIO TOWER IS SITUATED ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF TEMPE BUTTE WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE NORTH SECTION OF THE CITY OF TEMPE. THE TOP AND CENTER OF THE POLE, PAINTED ALTERNATELY RED AND WHITE, WHICH PROJECTS FROM A 30 FEET STEEL TOWER, WAS THE POINT OBSERVED. THE OVER-ALL HEIGHT OF THE TOWER IS 50 FEET. THE ELEVATION OF THE BUTTE IS 1496 FEET.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1967 (EP) THIS STATION WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in August 1993.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
