Coordinates correspond to a southern peak of a double peak. A register has been chained to a rock at this point, but there is no sign of any benchmark. No reliable boulder is on this peak, so the last remaining benchmark which was reported to not be on a solid rock back in 1970, has probably also been destroyed. I didn't check out the 2nd peak, but the coordinates would have to be off by 200 yards in that situation. And, since the initial benchmark for So. Calif. is less than a mile away, this is unlikely. Incidentally, the initial point was set in 1852 by Colonel Washington, and determines property lines for 11,000,000 parcels in the southwest. The reason it's not in this database is that it is just a couple of dead tree trunks propped up with a lot of rocks. However, a plaque commemorting it's sesquicentenial was placed nearby on August 2, 2003. Apparently, this country has only 37 initial survey points, but this one, at about 10,240' is the highest and most difficult to get to.

Documented History (by the NGS)

1/1/1929 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1929 (GLB) ABOUT 8 MILES BY TRAIL NORTHWEST OF FOREST HOME, ON MIDDLE PEAK OF SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAIN. TO REACH FROM TORRES CAMP AT FOREST HOME TAKE FOREST SERVICE TRAIL AND FOLLOW UP TO MIDDLE PEAK. MARKED BY STANDARD STATION DISK IN BEDROCK, NOTE 2. REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD REFERENCE DISKS IN BOULDERS, NOTE 12C. NO. 1 IS 4 FEET BELOW LEVEL OF STATION AND 12.578 METERS (41.27 FEET) FROM STATION IN AZIMUTH 192 DEG 41 MIN. NO. 2 IS 9 FEET BELOW LEVEL OF STATION AND 8.430 METERS (27.66 FEET) FROM STATION IN AZIMUTH 57 DEG 35 MIN.
1/1/1954 by USGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1954 THE STATION MARK AND BOTH REFERENCE MARKS WERE FOUND, BUT HAD BEEN SET IN ROCKS WHICH WERE VERY UNSTABLE, AND FROM ALL PROBABILITIES, THESE ROCKS WERE IN THIS CONDITION AT THE TIME THE MARKS WERE SET. THIS STATION COULD NOT BE USED IN A TRIANGULATION NET, BUT WAS IDENTIFIED ON PHOTS. THE POSITION FOR PHOTO USE WILL BE CORRECT WITHIN ONE OR TWO FEET.
1/1/1970 by USGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1970 THE STATION MARK AND R.M. 2 HAVE BEEN DESTROYED. R.M. 1 IS SET IN THE TOP OF A ROCK THAT TEETERS WHEN STOOD UPON.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1996. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
