As I was leaving the 12 Mile Circle Marker I noticed this BM and snapped a picture just in case. It clearly is Ebright No.1 BM just a few feet away from the 12 Mile Marker and real easy to spot.

My son and I were doing a cache near the highest elevation in Delaware and saw this thanks to Ms. Doreen who came over and told us all about the history behind it.

Today we found the Ebright Azminuth Mark, which a number of BM hunters are erroneously logging as the station Ebright. We have still not found the station, but the azimuth is the state highpoint, so it's cool!

Logging this as a find because while I didn't get to actually 'see' the benchmark disk I did see it's location. I can't see the disk because it's under asphalt. I found the reference markers. This was my fourth state highpoint, the others being MD, WV, and TN.

I was in the area with redlights and WanderingRedneck working on finding some of DE's newest - DGT - and oldest - hidden before 2002 - caches. While poking around the Wilmington area, we wandered by Delaware's highest point. I have now visited 3 highpoints - DE, DC, and MD. While taking our pictures by the sign declaring that we were near DE's highest point, we spotted a benchmark disc. It isn't the one listed here, but probably one of the room or reference points mentioned in the listing. Even if I can't log the find, it is still totally cool finding a benchmark disc.

In our search for high points of nearby states, we drove down from northern NJ to see for ourselves the heights of Delaware. Like others before us, we found reference mark 1 on the side of the road, and stood about where we thought (from descriptions here) the benchmark might be or have been. All in all it was a worthy thing to do and the centerpiece of a fun Dad's day weekend with one of my sons.

Fink007 and I found the reference markers and azimuth sign relating to this benchmark, and walked across where we figured the original mark would have been visible before the road was rebuilt. I think it's too bad that the mark is gone; it must be interesting to live here and have people wandering your driveway looking for it.

Returned this date with "sixthings" to search for the station. GPS and distances and bearings from RM1 and RM3 suggest that the station lies under a paved parking area in front of mobile homes number 10 and 12. Resident of home 10 advised us that the "brass disk" at the station's location survives, but was paved over "about 12 years ago". It is now about five feet north of the south edge and four feet east of the west edge of the parking area in front of home number 10. Found RM3 27 feet north of the north edge of Winterset Drive (the road has been re-routed since the 1982 description), 21 feet northwest of the large boulder at the west end of a row of boulders along the north side of Winterset, 12 south of a 16-inch Holly Tree, and at handheld coordinates N39-50.248 W075-31.335.

Could not find this disk. The descriptive references and my handheld’s GOTO suggest that the disk lies very close to, if not under, a mobile home. That, plus the scattered piles of snow, contributed to the fruitless search. However, I did find both RM1 and the AZ mark.
The RM1 is very prominently monumented 35 feet northwest of JU3627 (see that PID for general description and to reach directions). The handheld coords for RM1 are N39-50.238 W075-31.302.
The AZ mark is located on the west edge of the sidewalk on the west side of Ebright Road. It lies in a depression about four inches below the surface of the sidewalk, six feet SSW of a utility pole, 50 feet NNE of the approximate center of Turf Drive, and about 80 feet SW of a witness post and historical marker on the east side of Ebright Road. To reach the AZ mark from RM1 or JU3627, go east from the Ebright House on the paved road to the intersection with Ebright Road. Turn right and go south on Ebright Road for about 0.15 miles and the mark on the right, south of Ramblewood Drive leading east and north of Turf Drive leading west. There is a notch in the sidewalk to accommodate the disk. The historical marker on the east side of Ebright Road asserts that the AZ mark is the highest point in Delaware. The handheld coords for the AZ mark are N39-50.146 W075-31.149. If you are lucky, you will meet Doreen, the owner of the closest property to the historical marker. She is very well-versed in the controversy surrounding determination of Delaware’s highest point, and she will enthusiastically share her perspective with you. You’ll have to sign her visitors’ log book first, though.

The highest point in Delaware. What a riot. In anycase, the 1979 description seems to be a better one than the 1982, although both are entirely unneccesary. Once you drive into the community, its sitting there on the side of the road. You can't miss it. In fact, it is almost in the road.
