My wife and I took a 10 day vacation to Down East Maine and to the Bay of Fundy. With the myriad of stations in that area I had to be selective in what I went to look for (after all this was a vacation, not a benchmarking trip). I decided to go after two sorts of marks: boundary markers of various sorts, and triangulation stations which where part of the survey for the Eastern Oblique Arc, done in this area in the 1850s. A surprising number of these marks have survived in this area.

I knew this one had been lost in the late 1950s when the Air Force built a radar dome over the mark, but I just wanted to "check it out" as they say. The Air Force left the site in the 80s and the top of the hill is now used as a prison, so there was no way to visit the site up close.

However I'm glad I went since the original radar domes are now long gone and a radar dome of later construction is well to the south of the original station's location (see map and aerial inserts). So maybe, just maybe, the old mark is still there, perhaps under some crumbling concrete. Anyone want to get permission and check it out?

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1913 STATION IS ON A VERY PROMINENT HIGH BARE HILL KNOWN AS HOWARD MOUNTAIN, LOCATED ABOUT 5 MILES S OF MACHIASPORT, AND 1 MILE S OF BUCKS HARBOR, AND LESS THAN 1/2 MILE NW OF THE HEAD OF HOWARD BAY. THE LATTER IS AN ARM OF THE W SIDE OF MACHIAS BAY. THE ROAD FROM THE N CROSSES THE FOOT OF THE HILL ON THE E SIDE, AND FROM IT, NEAR THE HEAD OF HOWARD BAY, A WELL-WORN TRAIL LEADS TO THE SUMMIT. THE STATION IS ABOUT 3 METERS W OF THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE LEDGE AND ABOUT 4 FEET FROM THE SOUTHERN EDGE, AND IS MARKED BY A COPPER BOLT SET IN A HOLE IN THE ROCK, THE TOP OF OF THE BOLT BEING SLIGHTLY BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE ROCK.

RECOVERY NOTE BY MAINE GEODETIC SURVEY 1932 THE STATION IS MARKED BY A COPPER BOLT IN THE LEDGE AND I FOUND THE BOLT FIRMLY IN PLACE WHEN I VISITED THE STATION IN JULY AND AUGUST 1932, BUT THE HEAD WAS CONSIDERABLY BATTERED AND THE BOLT WAS NOT EASY TO FIND, BECAUSE OF THE ROUGHNESS OF THE LEDGE. I FOUND FIVE DRILL HOLES ON THE SUMMIT, ALTHOUGH NONE ARE MENTIONED IN THE DESCRIPTION. ACCORDING TO PROFESSOR HOSMER, OF THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TWO OF THESE HOLES WERE MADE SOME YEARS AGO BY STUDENTS AT THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING CAMP, NEAR EAST MACHIAS, WHO SOMETIMES OCCUPY THE STATION AND WHO MADE THE HOLES FOR REFERENCE MARKS. THE APPROXIMATE HORIZONTAL DISTANCES AND AZIMUTHS OF THESE TWO HOLES FROM THE STATION ARE AS FOLLOWS--16.0 FEET, 156 DEG. 10.0 FEET, 288-1/2 DEG. THE LATTER HOLE IS AT THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE LEDGE AND IS EASY TO FIND. THE OTHER THREE HOLES APPEARED TO BE ON LINES TO OTHER STATIONS, AS FOLLOWS. AND WERE PROBABLY MADE WHEN THE STATION WAS ORIGINALLY OCCUPIED--PIGEON HILL 32.9 FEET. EAST BASE 51.2 FEET. MITTEN MOUNT 14.15 FEET. THERE MAY BE OTHER RANGE HOLES WHICH I MISSED BECAUSE OF THE ROUGHNESS OF THE LEDGE, WHICH IS COVERED IN PLACES WITH MOSS AND SOIL. THE VIEW FROM THE STATION IS CLEAR, EXCEPT FOR A FEW SMALL SCATTERED TREES. NEAR THE STATION WAS THE WRECKAGE OF A SIGNAL TRIPOD WHICH HAD BEEN USED BY THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS. I BUILT A SMALL CAIRN OVER THE BOLT. THE STATION MAY BE REACHED FROM MACHIAS OR MACHIASPORT, BY A FAIRLY GOOD ROAD PASSING S THROUGH THE VILLAGES OF LARRABEE AND BUCKS HARBOR, TO HOWARD BAY. THE ROAD CROSSES A BROOK AT THE HEAD OF HOWARD BAY AND THE TRAIL LEAVES THE ROAD, ON THE WESTERN SIDE, A LITTLE MORE THAN 600 FEET S OF THE BROOK. THE ENTRANCE TO THE TRAIL IS SOMEWHAT OBSCURE AND IS PART WAY UP A RATHER STEEP GRADE IN THE ROAD. THE TRAIL IS CONSIDERABLY GROWN UP WITH BUSHES BUT IS NOT DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW, THE CLIMB TO THE STATION REQUIRING ONLY ABOUT 10 MINUTES.

TWO OTHER DRILL HOLES ARE 4.87 METERS AND 4.30 METERS FROM THE STATION, BEING RESPECTIVELY APPROXIMATELY NW AND NNW OF THE STATION MARK. THREE ADDITIONAL REFERENCE MARKS WERE ESTABLISHED. THEY ARE MARKED BY STANDARD DISKS WEDGED IN DRILL HOLES IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK. REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 BEING NNW OF THE STATION AND SLIGHTLY LOWER IN ELEVATION. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 BEING ENE OF THE STATION AND ABOUT 3 FEET LOWER AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 BEING SE OF THE STATION AND ABOUT 1 FOOT LOWER. TO REACH FROM MACHIAS GO W ON HIGHWAY 1 ACROSS THE BRIDGE IN MACHIAS, TURN LEFT AND CONTINUE DOWN RIGHT BANK AT MACHIAS RIVER. TAKE RIGHT FORK 8.0 MILES FROM MACHIAS AND AT 8.8 MILES AGAIN TAKE RIGHT FORK. AT 9.7 STOP TRUCK AT A POINT HALFWAY UP STEEP GRADE. A ROCKY STREAM TRAIL LEADS UP THE HILL ON THE NW SIDE OF THE ROAD. FOLLOW THIS TRAIL ABOUT 1/4 MILE TO SUMMIT AND STATION AFTER FIRST CROSSING A SMALL RIDGE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1946 (RAG) STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS WERE FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE. DISTANCES TO REFERENCE MARKS WERE CHECKED.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1959 (GFW) STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARKS NO. 2 AND NO. 3 WERE NOT RECOVERED. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 WAS RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE SITE OF THIS STATION IS NOW OCCUPIED BY THE BUCKS HARBOR AIR FORCE STATION. THE MOST NORTHERLY OF FOUR RADAR DOMES, LOCATED AT THE STATION, WAS DESIGNED TO BE CENTERED OVER TRIANGULATION STATION HOWARD, 1859. AS FAR AS COULD BE DETERMINED BY THIS PARTY THE DOME IS IS VERY CLOSELY CENTERED OVER THE STATION, HOWEVER, IT IS DOUBTFUL THAT THE FINIAL OF THE DOME IS IN THE PRECISE POSITION AS THE STATION.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1960 (HRL) REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 WAS RECOVERED AND FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. THE OTHER MARKS WERE NOT RECOVERED AND MAY BE CONSIDERED LOST. THE MOST NORTHERLY OF FOUR RADAR DOMES OF THE BUCKS HARBOR AIR FORCE STATION IS LOCATED OVER THE STATION MARK. THEREFORE STATION HOWARD 2 WAS ESTABLISHED NEAR THE LOCATION OF THE ORIGINAL STATION. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE A DIRECT TIE BETWEEN STATIONS.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1962 (LD) STATION IS LOST. AT BUCKS HARBOR AIR FORCE BASE, NEAR THE SUMMIT OF HOWARD MOUNTAIN, 87.6 FEET SOUTH OF THE STATION, 0.5 FOOT EAST OF THE EAST SIDE OF THE NORTH RADOME OF FOUR, SET IN THE TOP OF A LARGE LARGE BEDROCK ABOUT LEVEL WITH THE BASE OF THE LARGE RADOME. NOTE--THE ARROW ON THIS REFERENCE MARK POINTS TO THE OLD STATION WHICH IS NOW COVERED WITH THE RADOME.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in March 1998.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
