I wasn't planning on attempting this one until I saw the replicas in the gift shop and a light went off in my head. Luckily, my phone got enough reception for me to google the coords and make the find. It's funny how secluded this part of the summit is compared to the nearby parking area. Nice!

Found this one after exploring the "summit" of Cadillac Mountain. I personally think it is hilarious that the true summit with the benchmarks is not really pointed out from the parking area, and that the hordes of tourists are satisfied with exploring an area near the summit that has the great views. I wonder if this was done on purpose when the road to the summit was opened as a compromise to not destroy the true summit. Anyways, a very cool place to visit!

Dad and I were driving around Acadia National Park and I just had to grab this benchmark. A couple of the giftshops at the park sell copies of the benchmark. They do the same thing at the Grand Teton National Park with a couple of their mountain benchmarks. I thought that was so cool, but I resisted the temptation to buy my own copy of the benchmark. I'll try to upload a pic soon. Thanks! Cool!

My wife and I took a 10 day vacation to Down East Maine and to the Bay of Fundy. With the myriad of stations in that area I had to be selective in what I went to look for (after all this was a vacation, not a benchmarking trip). I decided to go after two sorts of marks: boundary markers of various sorts, and triangulation stations which where part of the survey for the Eastern Oblique Arc, done in this area in the 1850s. A surprising number of these marks have survived in this area.

Today was the day we had to leave Saint John, New Brunswick. We decided a drive to the Boston are was much too much, so we headed for Bar Harbor for one last day in the scenic down-east of Maine. After studying the map of the Eastern Oblique Arc, I thought bagging Rye and Cooper would be possible on the way to Bar Harbor. Rye was a major disappointment (see QF0932) whereas Cooper was quite the opposite: a drive up and a mark you could spot from the car (see PD1041).

This one was a "Gimme", one that was often logged and easy to get to.

We got to Bar Harbor around 4:00 PM and checked into our motel. We figured we had just enough time to drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain, bag the mark, bag some views, and with luck, bag the sunset before heading into town for dinner.

Well, I did bag the mark(s), we did bag some views, and we most certainly bagged d beautiful sunset. And dinner was scrumptious (loved that local brew!).

A great way to end a great vacation.

This USGS bench mark (K 24) was set in 1934 when the USGS ran a level line from the Bar Harbor post office through the park. It is on the same ledge as the station on the highest point. It is not associated with the station from a surveyors perspective, but it is often used as another reference mark.

We got a tip from a friendly woman in the gift shop of the main visitor center where we had to search for the benchmarks. On the summit of Mount Cadillac take the south ridge trail. The trail is on the left side of the small gift shop.

Just a short distance from PE1787 we (DraigAthar and I) found this one - what a nice surprise. Not one, but four (perhaps 5) markers!. We found the "US Geological Survey" disk first (it's the highest point of all), then the USGS marker. After some more searching (and scratching our heads while reading the notes about markers which became lost and replaced over time) found the RM#1 and RM#2. I also found a suspicious looking bolt set in a drilled hole which I thought might be a remnant of earlier markers, too.

I drove out along the Park Loop Road from Bar Harbor up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain and easily found all FOUR marks in this set using the historical description. At the station my Garmin GPSmap76 receiver indicated 7.5 feet from the posted coordinates for the station. These four discs were all quite visible and are in excellent condition. I was at the summit years ago before geocaching, benchmarking and cheap gps. I was on vacation with friends we had a discussion about the highest point on the mountain, there is a tourist lookout that says it's the highest point.... I said it was not and walked/climbed over to where I thought the summit was..... I saw the disk...at that point in time I did not know that I had found a benchmark and forgot about until just recently..........

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1902 ON THE HIGHEST ELEVATION OF MOUNT DESERT ISLAND, KNOWN AS MOUNT DESERT OR GREEN MOUNT. IT IS A VERY COMMANDING POSITION AND THE VIEW IS UNOBSTRUCTED IN ALL DIRECTIONS. THE STATION IS ON THE SUMMIT AND 22-1/4 INCHES E OF THE SE CORNER OF A CREVICE IN THE ROCK. THE STATION IS A HOLE DRILLED IN A ROCK. ALSO THE FOLLOWING RANGE DRILL HOLES WERE FOUND 53.17 FEET FROM STATION ON LINE TOWARD PEAKED MOUNTAIN, 17.52 FEET FROM THE STATION ON LINE TO BLUE HILL, AND 21.83 FEET FROM THE STATION ON LINE TO RAGGED MOUNTAIN.
1/1/1931 by MEGS (SEE DESCRIPTION)
RECOVERY NOTE BY MAINE GEODETIC SURVEY 1931 THE STATION IS ON THE HIGHEST PART OF CADILLAC MOUNTAIN (FORMERLY CALLED GREEN MOUNTAIN), IN THE ACADIA NATIONAL PARK. A FINE AUTOMOBILE ROAD ON THE MOUNTAIN WAS OPENED IN OCTOBER 1931, AND THIS ROAD PASSES SOME 500 FEET TO THE N OF THE STATION, MAKING IT EASY OF ACCESS. ON JULY 18, 1931, I FOUND A DRILL HOLE WHICH APPEARED TO BE THE STATION MARK AND WHICH CHECKED FAIRLY WELL WITH THE RANGE HOLES. IT WAS COVERED WITH SEVERAL STONES WHICH HAD APPARENTLY ONCE BEEN A CAIRN. ABOUT 10 FEET S OF THE HOLE THE LEDGE WAS A FEW FEET HIGHER, BEING APPARENTLY THE HIGHEST POINT ON THE ISLAND, AND WAS MARKED BY A CAIRN, UNDER WHICH I COULD FIND NO HOLE OR OTHER MARK. THE CAIRN REMAINS IN PLACE. ON SEPT. 1, 1931, I CEMENTED A STANDARD C. AND G.S. TRIANGULATION TABLET IN THE HOLE, AND SET TWO STANDARD REFERENCE MARKS IN EXPOSED LEDGE, THE HORIZONTAL DISTANCES FROM THE STATION BEING ABOUT AS FOLLOWS--NO.1, 75.8 FEET, NO.2 58.0 FEET. THESE VALUES ARE ONLY APPROXIMATE, BECAUSE OF UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS FOR THE MEASUREMENTS, AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE RELIED ON TO PERHAPS ONE OR TWO TENTHS OF A FOOT AND TWO OR THREE MINUTES OF ARC. I HOPE TO HAVE MORE ACCURATE FIGURES NEXT YEAR. THE VIEW FROM THE STATION IS OBSTRUCTED BY TREES FROM ABOUT S, THROUGH W, TO ABOUT NNE. AND PARTIALLY CUT OFF BY A LOWER SUMMIT OF THE SAME MOUNTAIN, TO THE EASTWARD. FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS SEE MY LETTER OF DEC. 7, 1931.

RECOVERY NOTE BY MAINE GEODETIC SURVEY 1932 WHEN I RE-MARKED THIS STATION IN 1931 THE ONLY REFERENCE MARKS OF WHICH I HAD KNOWLEDGE WERE THE THREE HOLES MENTIONED IN THE PRINTED DESCRIPTION. LATER I OBTAINED A COPY OF A SKETCH IN THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION OF THE STATION, WHICH SHOWED RANGE HOLES ON LINE TO A NUMBER OF OTHER STATIONS, AND IN 1932 I VISITED THE STATION AGAIN TO SEE IF I COULD FIND ANY OF THESE HOLES AND THUS GET AN ADDITIONAL CHECK ON MY IDENTIFICATION OF THE STATION POINT. I FOUND 6 OUT OF 8 OF THE NEARER HOLES OF THE RANGES AND THESE CHECKED IN AZIMUTH TO WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OF ARC, WHICH WAS AS CLOSE AS I COULD DETERMINE THE DIRECTIONS WITH THE MINIATURE TRANSIT WHICH I USED, BUT THE DISTANCES WERE ALL LESS THAN THOSE GIVEN ON THE SKETCH. MY MEASUREMENTS WERE AS FOLLOWS, THE DISTANCES ON THE SKETCH BEING IN PARENTHESES, ALL BEING IN FEET AND INCHES--ISLE AU HAUT 50-6-1/2 (50-11). TUNK 40-5 (41-1). BURKE NOT FOUND. COOPER 86-6 (86-10). EAST BASE 112-3 (112-7). MITTEN MOUNT 66-7 (67-4). HOWARD 56-4 (57-2). THE FARTHER HOLES OF THESE RANGES WERE, ACCORDING TO THE SKETCH, SO FAR FROM THE STATION THAT I DID NOT LOOK FOR THEM, EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF MITTEN MOUNT, WHICH I FOUND AND WHICH WAS ABOUT RIGHT IN AZIMUTH, BUT I DID NOT MEASURE THE DISTANCE BECAUSE OF INTERVENING BUSHES. THE DISCREPANCIES IN DISTANCE ARE PERHAPS DUE TO INACCURACIES IN THE ORIGINAL MEASUREMENTS, OR IN MINE, OVER RATHER ROUGH GROUND, AND TO POSSIBLE SLIGHT DIFFERENCES DUE TO HORIZONTAL OR SLOPE DISTANCES. THE LINE TO STATION TUNK, ON THE SKETCH, IS MARKED WITH A NAME WHICH LOOKS LIKE HINK, BUT THIS IS EVIDENTLY AN ERROR, AS THERE IS NO SUCH STATION IN THE VICINITY, AND THE DIRECTION IS CORRECT FOR TUNK. THE HOLES ON LINES TO RAGGED MOUNTAIN, BLUE HILL AND PEAKED MOUNTAIN, WHICH ARE MENTIONED IN THE PRINTED DESCRIPTION, ARE NOT SHOWN ON THE SKETCH, BUT THEY CHECKED FAIRLY WELL, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ONE SAID TO BE ON THE LINE TO BLUE HILL, WHICH WAS ABOUT 3 DEG S OF THAT LINE. THIS HOLE (A SHALLOW ONE) IS, HOWEVER, ON OR CLOSE TO THE LINE TO MOUNT BLUE, WHICH IS A STATION OF THE PRIMARY SCHEME, ALTHOUGH I CAN FIND NO RECORD THAT THE LINE WAS OBSERVED OVER, PROBABLY BECAUSE OF OBSTRUCTIONS. I FEEL THAT ON THE WHOLE MY IDENTIFICATION OF THE STATION HAS BEEN CONFIRMED, BUT I HOPE THAT THE NEXT SUMMER IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO MAKE SOME BETTER DETERMINATIONS OF THE DISTANCES AND AZIMUTHS OF THE RANGE HOLES.
1/1/1933 by MEGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY MAINE GEODETIC SURVEY 1933 DURING THE SUMMER OF 1933 I FOUND 6 MORE OF THE RANGE HOLES AT THIS STATION, MAKING WITH THE 10 PREVIOUSLY FOUND, 16 IN ALL. THESE INCLUDE THE 3 HOLES MENTIONED IN THE DESCRIPTION (BUT NOT SHOWN ON THE ORIGINAL SKETCH), AND ALL BUT ONE OF THE 14 HOLES SHOWN ON THE SKETCH IN THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION. THE ONE MISSING HOLE WAS PROBABLY DESTROYED BY THE BREAKING OFF OF A PIECE OF THE LEDGE. (THIS WAS THE NEARER HOLE ON THE LINE TO BURKE). IN ADDITION I FOUND ONE HOLE WHICH WAS SIMILAR TO THE OTHERS BUT WHICH I COULD NOT IDENTIFY AS BEING ON A LINE TO ANY STATION. IT WAS DISTANT ABOUT 49.1 FEET FROM THE FARTHER HOLE ON THE LINE TO HOWARD, IN A DIRECTION SOMEWHAT S OF E. ALTHOUGH THESE RANGE HOLES MAY BE OF NO IMPORTANCE, I HAVE MENTIONED THEM BECAUSE THEY FURNISH A CONVENIENT CHECK ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE STATION POINT, WHICH I RE-MARKED IN 1931. THE CAIRN MENTIONED IN MY 1931 RECOVERY NOTE HAS BEEN REMOVED, DOUBTLESS BY THE PARK AUTHORITIES, AND A WEDGE-SHAPED STONE SET IN ITS PLACE. THE STONE IS ABOUT 12 FEET, IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION, FROM THE STATION TABLET.
1/1/1934 by CGS (SEE DESCRIPTION)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 (KGC) STATION WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED. IT IS NOW A STANDARD BRONZE DISK WEDGED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK, WITH TWO REFERENCE MARKS, STANDARD BRONZE DISKS IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK. IT IS ON THE FLAT LEDGE 13 FEET N OF THE U.S.G.S. BENCH MARK. THE BENCH MARK IS ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN. THE MOUNTAIN IS NOW KNOWN AS CADILLAC MOUNTAIN AND IS A PART OF ARCADIA NATIONAL PARK. THE SUMMIT IS EASILY REACHED BY A PAVED ROAD. THE STATION IS ABOUT 100 YARDS SW OF THE PARKING CIRCLE AT THE END OF THIS ROAD. DRILL HOLES ON LINE TO OTHER STATIONS WERE FOUND AS FOLLOWS--ISLE AU HAUT 50.4 FEET, RAGGED MOUNTAIN 21.7 FEET, TUNK 40.4 FEET, COOPER 86.5 FEET, EAST BASE 112.3 FEET, MITTEN MOUNT 66.6 FEET, HOWARD 56.3 FEET. THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE HORIZONTAL AND ARE SLIGHTLY LESS THAN THE RECORD DISTANCES GIVEN IN THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION.
1/1/1944 by CGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1944 (FLP) STATION AND REFERENCE MARK 1 RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION AS DESCRIBED BY K.G.C. IN 1934. NO ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO RECOVER DRILL HOLES. REFERENCE MARK 2 HAS BEEN COVERED APPROXIMATELY 4 FEET DEEP BY A ROADWAY OF STONE WITH MACADAM SURFACE.
1/1/1960 by CGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1960 (HRL) THE STATION WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED AND ALL MARKS FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. THE PREVIOUS DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDITION-- THE STATION MAY BE REACHED AFTER ARRIVING AT THE PARKING CIRCLE AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN BY GOING SOUTHERLY ON THE PAVED DRIVEWAY RUNNING ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE GIFT SHOP TO THE END OF PAVEMENT AND THE STATION ABOUT 100 FEET FURTHER SOUTH.
1/1/1971 by NGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1971 (LFS) STATION WAS RECOVERED AND ALL MARKS FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE DISTANCE AND ANGLES TO THE REFERENCE MARKS WAS NOT CHECKED DUE TO LACK OF TIME. STATION IS LOCATED IN ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, ON THE SUMMIT OF CADILLAC MOUNTAIN, AT THE NORTHWEST END OF THE OPEN, BEDROCK AREA, ABOUT 200 YARDS SOUTHWEST OF THE PARKING AREA AT END OF PARK HIGHWAY. TO REACH STATION FROM THE ACADIA NATIONAL PARK HEADQUARTERS AT BASE OF THE MOUNTAIN, FOLLOW THE PARK HIGHWAY FOR 6.9 MILES TO SUMMIT, AND END OF HIGHWAY AT PARKING AREA. WALK SOUTHWEST UP GRAVELED ROADWAY ABOUT 125 YARDS TO STATION. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED MT DESERT 1856, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK. REFERENCE MARK NUMBER ONE IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED MT DESERT RM 1 1856, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK, NORTHEAST FROM STATION ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF BRUSH PATCH, AND ABOUT 4 FEET LOWER THAN STATION. REFERENCE MARK NUMBER TWO IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED MT DESERT RM 2 1856, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK, SOUTHEAST FROM STATION ALONG HILLTOP, AT ABOUT SAME ELEVATION AS STATION. USGS BM IS A STANDARD USGS DISK CEMEMTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE HIGHEST BEDROCK FORMATION ON THE HILL, ABOUT 3 FEET HIGHER THAN STATION. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN 2-1/2 MILES SW OF BAR HARBOR.
