After asking in the forums here and at Minnesota Geocaching Association, I throw caution to the wind and say that this is encased in a PVC pipe. You can see this one from the other side of the road.

My coordinates: N 45º 28.435 W 094º 19.959.

The benchmark is about 40 ft. ENE of the northeast corner of a fence surrounding an electrical substation. I did not fight my way through the brush with a tape measure to be sure. This reference marker is also approximately 185 ft. east of the street sign at the intersection.

The following has been submitted to the NGS:

IN ROCKVILLE, NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF COUNTY ROAD 82 AND CHAPEL ROAD. THE MARK IS 31.8 FT (9.7 M) SOUTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF CHAPEL ROAD, 1.6 FT (0.5 M) WEST OF A STEEL WITNESS POST AND 1.5 FT (0.5 M) NORTHEAST OF A UTILITY POLE. NOTE--THE ROD IS ENCASED IN A 6-INCH PVC PIPE THAT PROJECTS 0.4 FT (0.11 M) ABOVE THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. HH2 COORDINATES N45 28 26.1, W094 19 57.5.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1995.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
