Stopped by today with MentalBill and sdkonkle. Benchmark is still there, but this time I found Reference Mark #1 instead of #2 .

Found it after grabbing a cache (GC108YY) earlier on the trail. Found Ref. Mark #2 also (N21 28.049 W158 11.293).

Pretty ugly. Hard to read the word "Makaha" but the 1927 stands out. Also found one of the referance points but did not photo it.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1927 (LGS) IN WESTERN PART OF OAHU, ABOUT 1-3/4 MILES NORTH OF WAIANAE, ON FIRST RIDGE NORTH OF WAIANAE LEADING WEST FROM WAIANAE RANGE ON A PROMINENT RISE IN RIDGE, VERY NEAR HALFWAY ALONG THE RIDGE FROM THE WESTERN END TO WHERE IT BECOMES PRECIPITOUS. MARKED ACCORDING TO NOTE 2, A STANDARD DISK STATION MARK IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK. REFERENCE MARKS, NOTE 12A, STANDARD REFERENCE DISKS IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK, ARE AT THE FOLLOWING DISTANCES AND AZIMUTHS FROM STATION--NO. 1, 3.556 METERS 11.67 FEET), 97 DEG 51 MIN. NO. 2, 15.132 METERS (49.65 FEET), 229 DEG 36 MIN. RE-MARKED ACCORDING TO NOTE 14X IN 1929.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1964 (DGR) STATION WAS RECOVERED AND ALL MARKS FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS-- STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 1-1/2 MILES NORTH OF WAIANAE ON THE PROMINENT RIDGE NORTH OF THE TOWN, AT A POINT ABOUT 1312 FEET ELEVATION. TO REACH STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE IN WAIANAE, GO NORTHWEST ON FARRINGTON HIGHWAY FOR 1.7 MILES. TURN RIGHT AND GO NORTHEAST ON MAIUU RD. FOR 0.3 MILE TO T-JUNCTION OF KAUIAWAHA RD. AT POINT OF RIDGE. FROM HERE PACK NORTHEAST ON TRAIL UP POINT OF RIDGE AND FOLLOW IT ALONG RIDGE CREST FOR ABOUT 1 MILE TO STATION. (A 1-HOUR PACK). STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED MAKAHA 1927, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BEDROCK OUTCROP THAT PROJECTS 1-1/2 FEET ABOVE GROUND. REFERENCE MARK NUMBER ONE IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED MAKAHA NO 1, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A SMALL BEDROCK LEDGE THAT EXTENDS OUT 2 FEET FROM THE HILL LINE AND PROJECTS 1 FOOT ON THE LOW SIDE. REFERENCE MARK NUMBER TWO IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED MAKAHA NO 2, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A TRIANGULAR, 2-FOOT BEDROCK OUTCROP THAT PROJECTS 6 INCHES ABOVE GROUND. IT IS 2 FEET SOUTH OF THE RIDGE TRAIL AT ABOUT SAME ELEVATION AS STATION MARK, AND HIDDEN BY BRUSH AND GRASS.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in December 1998. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
